..Failed..Again.. - September 29th 2009, 03:33 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of self harm, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

I made a promise a few of my friends who knew about my problem to stop self harming. I lasted six days but not longer then that... today crashed over me like a wave and I didn't handle it well. I made all my friends mad at me and angered them to get them to stay away from me. Then I sat there and self harmed. How do I stop???

I feel like such a failure. My friends are being supportive but I still feel like I failed them... they're disappointed in me but what do I do??

And I made one friend angry with me. I picked and picked at him until he would go away.. how do I gain his friendship back?

Hey,

I am sorry that you are going through this at the moment. I have always thought that making promises to stop self harming is unrealistic. Self harm is so addictive and you will stop in your own time and shouldn't be made to stop before you are ready to. It has to be you that wants to stop because doing it for other people isn't right. Only you can decide when the time is right for you to stop. Before actually stopping you might have a number of slip ups a long the way but these are part of recovery.

You are not a failure. 6 days without self harm is great. That is nearly a whole week! That is an achievement because self harm is so hard to give up. But you will get there so don't let these slip ups set you back. Perhaps you just need to set yourself little goals of trying to go longer than 6 days this time. I don't think it is fair for you to promise to your friends you will stop completely because that is pretty impossible. You might need to explain to them that it isn't as simple as just promising to stop. They shouldn't be disappointed in you. I think the main thing here is you are trying; that is all anyone can ask. You can get through this so keep hanging on. I am always happy to listen if you ever want to chat. Stay strong
