For how long have you been depressed? - March 31st 2010, 12:41 AM

Im asking this because i always wonder for how long can a person be depressed. When i was a kid I used to be really happy, had friends enjoy things even though i had difficulties with my self esteem. I think when i first started to feel depressed was when i was 23 but now its getting worse, beacuse before i didnt had suicidal thoughts and now i do all the time.

Hi Lucy,

There is no given time period as to how long depression can last. It depends on each individual and the severity of the depression that they are suffering from. Left untreated by a doctor, depression lasts much longer than it would if the said person were in therapy or were taking medication.

How long have you been depressed? If you leave your depression untreated, it could last up to years. This is why it is important to visit a doctor if you have been remaining depressed for quite some time. I would suggest that you do this, and then follow the directions that your doctor gives you in order to control your depression.

You might want to visit this sticky: http://www.teenhelp.org/forums/f11-d...o-can-help-me/ which gives you a list of people you may be able to speak with who can help you find the best solutions to your depression.

There's no doubt that depression is a battle, Lucy, but please remember that you are not alone. Speak up to the people around you, and I guarantee that your voice will be heard. You are strong, and you can get through this. I'm here to talk if you ever need me.

Hang in there and keep on fighting!

Re: For how long have you been depressed? - March 31st 2010, 03:04 AM

It's hard for me to pinpoint exactly how long I've been depressed. I was diagnosed with clinical depression last fall and started meds at that point. Before that, I hadn't really been happy for at least 5 years (since starting high school), but I still had friends, passions, went out often, etc. I drank heavily for a year, usually four to five nights a week, which may have contributed to some of what I'm feeling now. All in all, it's really only started interfering with my thought patterns, memory, etc. in the past year, and I started having suicidal thoughts back in August of 09. My grades have definitely taken a hit recently, though I can't tell if it's related to some sort of cognitive decline or just general apathy.

Have you sought any help for the issues you've been facing? Antidepressants do work for some people, as does counseling, CBT and group therapy. If your insurance doesn't cover psychiatry or therapy, GP's are "qualified" to prescribe antidepressants, but -- in my experience, don't really know anything about the differences between them.

I'm going to make this short and sweet, but I have been depressed since I was 10 but was diagnosed with bipolar when I was 16.

I've been depressed on and off about a year. There are different types of depression you can look up if you want. There is severe depression which usually lasts a shorter period of time but is more severe. Then there is dysthymia which can last a long time but isn't as intense. If your depression continues, I'd consider seeing someone about it.

Whatever it is, chances are I've been there.
If I can make it out, you can too.

There really is no set amount of time for being depressed. I've had depression for around 8 years with episodes of extremely intense depression. Hang in there, though. You can overcome depression.

Re: For how long have you been depressed? - April 1st 2010, 04:58 PM

I think my depression started at 12.
When I was 15, I grew up a lot (completely changed. I can hardly remember anything before this age) and my depression grew immensely at the same time, as well as developing an anxiety disorder and paranoia.
Now, I'm 17. Each year I tell myself the next one will be better, but somehow they keep getting worse. I've only been suicidal for the past year.

I think don't think depression has an exact length. It can end, though. It will, one day. Hang in there

I'm scared to say it's gone, because although i've been feeling good for a while now it can sometimes come back to bite you in the ass when you least expect it. But for me it started at around eleven and was still going at least a few months ago. It has gotten better though. But there is no given time for it really, it's different for everyone and can definitely be influenced by different factors, I think.

I was diagnosed as clinically depressed when I was about 12. It comes and goes, though, so it's not so bad.

Re: For how long have you been depressed? - April 3rd 2010, 06:50 AM

I can state definitely that I was at 8 but I feel as though there were signs that indicate a tendency towards depression at an earlier age. It has gotten worse since then and I haven't had moments of reprise. It finally got severe enough in 11th grade that I had to tell people and I got diagnosed as major depressive. However, I am 99.9% sure that I am double depressive. At any rate, I am now 20 and so it's been at least 12 years. I don't really feel like I know or remember happiness. I think I might feel moments of it but it doesn't last and I don't remember what it feels like later. I'm not sure if it'll ever go away but I'm working on it because I know others have found happiness.

Depression can last for years or it can last for weeks, it has no rules, much like love in a way. I was depressed from the age of 8 through to 15 and I'm only just coming out of it slowly. X

Yes, there's no set amount of time for which depression lasts. It varies with individuals.
