Hi Jenna,

Congratulations for going so long without self-harming! That is a real accomplishment! I'm sorry you're struggling so much, though. I know how sometimes, when you're depressed, it can seem like the pain will never end. However, it will! You cannot hurt forever. Things will get better, if you continue to keep your chin up!

I really encourage you to check out our Alternatives thread, stickied on the Self-Harm forum. It contains many healthy alternative coping methods to self-harm, and I myself have found it to be very helpful. Try some things out and see what you like! It's great when you're fighting off urges.

Also, do you see a counselor at all? Or, if you don't, is there someone you could talk to, like a parent, friend, or teacher? Sometimes having support can really help to keep you going as you recover from depression and self-harm.

Take care and stay strong! xx

Hey there,

Relapses happen the important thing is that you pick yourself up from it. Don't keep this relapse a secret from your doctors or the groups you attend because then it might fill you up with shame and lead you to cutting again.

Overcoming self harm is a long and involved process; it is not just going to go away after a couple of weeks. The most important thing is that you do not give up on your ability to beat the self harm. If you want to stop bad enough you can and will do it but 1) you can't give up and 2) you have to remind yourself that it is a long and involved process with many ups and downs.

I definitely recommend that you look into the alternatives. And, if you have friends or family that know you are struggling with this you should try talking to them. I know it can be hard to open up about these things but the more people that know and who can support you the better.

Can I ask what triggered you? If you can figure out what your triggers are and work on avoiding them or working through them you might start to notice that your urges die down a bit.

I hope this helped and if you need anything feel free to pm me.

Jenna
