I don't think they're exactly the same. I would go to a therapist first and see if you can get your problems sorted out there.

I might be wrong but I think that psychologist more try to figure out what the problem is and therapists more try to work through the problem to solve it. I'm not sure though I could be wrong.

They basically have the same training, a psychologist has a PhD which allows them to call themselves a psychologist. Both may also have a PsyD which means they had clinical instead of research degree. The terms counselor and therapist can be used interchangebly (to my knowledge anyway) and counselors have at least a masters in counseling. It's really up to you. You probably won't notice much of a difference between the two.

I would say it depends on what you are looking for help with, Psychologist normally have you do a series of tests, ask you a lot of questions and give you suggestions to help you out which may include a therapist/counselor. They are not both the same. A therapist is there to help you through your problems including following through with the suggestions of the psychologist.
If you want something a little more in depth and the possibility of medication then a psychiatrist may be better in terms of who to see. In the long run the decision is completely up to you but whichever way you go they are there to help you and will do so to the best of their ability.
