Question Problems taking pills? - March 13th 2011, 11:38 AM

I'm not entirely sure where to post this thread but it's about depression medication.

I was prescribed prozac to take for my depression the other day. Although I really can't swallow the pill. I just threw up earlier after taking the pill. Does anyone else have trouble swallowing pills? And How do you take them?

I personally never take pills, as I believe they don't belong to my body, but that's my own choice... If I have a headache, I don't take a paracetamol, I just lay down and take it easy, which works wonders as well. But prozac is a different ballpark.

Those fluoxetine pills can be quite sizey, they're not huge, but they're big and things I've heard that could help are:
- Take a sip of water, don't swallow it, throw your head back, then put the pill in your mouth, let it float there and swallow the water and pill altogether
- Eat a dry cracker, crunch it and drench it with saliva, then put the pill on top of it and clunk it down your throat

Good luck! I'm sure you will find a way that works well for you.

Can you break the pill? If it's a tablet I'm sure you could do this. I talked to my doctor because I'm on 300mg Lithium pills and she had the pharmacy cut them in half. I then break them into quarters and eat them with yogurt. Don't worry, you're not the only one

I have a terrible time swallowing pills and what generally works for me is to put the pill on the middle of my tongue, get a large sip of my drink, and then tilt my chin down towards my chest. The pill goes to my throat that way and swallowing becomes a lot easier. That said, if it is possible to break into pieces than I would do that as well, but this generally is only possible with tablets.

Personally, whenever I have to take pills, I do the one thing that Daniel said. I'll take a bit of water, drop the pill in, then drink a bit more water and swallow it all together. You don't really notice it when it's floating in water.

Wow, I have this EXACT problem. I have had it all my life and I think I will always have it. I simply cannot swallow a pill with just water, my gag reflex kicks in and I just cannot swallow. so what I do is I take a spoonful of peanut butter, and put it in my mouth, and then take the pill and put it int my mouth as well, and try to swallow the peanutbutter with the pill mixed in. It works EVERY time.

Veterinarians do this same trick with dogs to get them to swallow pills.

I'm EXACTLY the same. I put it on my tongue, and when it starts going back, I feel like throwing up and can't swallow it. Churning it into powder and taking it like that is torture so I normally look for liquid or chewy medicines because of that. I suggest doing what Matt said above and taking it with something like peanut butter (jam, etc. also works if you don't like it).

I had a similar problem except I would take them and it would feel like it was stuck in my throat and I couldn't swallow so I had to spit a lot.So they prescribed me liquid prozac instead.

I can't take pills, it's really hard, I often gag while trying. However when the situation arises that I must, I hid it in food, and close my eyes while eating. It works.

That or try asking for liquid, most doctors assume pills are easier for on the go people, but most medications come in liquid.

Drink swigs of water. Put the pill in your mouth. Then take a big gulp of water and swallow it. The more water you are able to put in your mouth along with the pill, the better. As it will allow a smooth flow down your esophagus. When I had to take meds, I hated swallowing pills, but you get sort of used to it.
