What's happened to me? - March 25th 2011, 10:04 AM

:/ I have been diagnosed with depression, and I self-harm.

I don't know what's happened to me since last year. My family haven't been supportive atall, they call me mental. And I just feel so down, never want to go out and just sit in my bedroom thinking.

I've had a sweep of problems rush into me and I just can;t deal with them. The only thing that helps me is cutting myself up and taking heaps of Painkillers.

I don't know why, or how and neither does my therapist. I don;t know what's happened to me.

I think that what you need, is someone to talk to. Maybe you have a close friend or relative? If not, I'm always here, if you need to talk :-)
Try not to blame your family for being unsupportive. It's not their fault, but you have to understand that it isn't yours either. They are in the wrong, for not supporting you when you need them, but it's not the end of the world. There's so many people you can talk to, you just need a friend and someone that you can express your feelings to.
My Dad was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder last year, which is a type of depression. Having that sort of illness can really take it's toll on a family, and I know we've had so many arguments, and there are times when I really just don't see the point in carrying on. But I have an amazing group of friends who always know when I'm down, and help me through stuff, you know? I also find ways to express myself. Artwork, writing songs, stories and poetry, there's actually so much you can do to make yourself feel better!:-)
I hope that you're being prescribed some sort of antidepressant, because they will help you. Taking tons of painkillers won't, so you need to stop. Also, the self-harm, is really not good. What's happening is, you probably feel totally out of control, because sometimes you feel so down, and you don't want to. That's okay! You can get past it, and you can enjoy life!:-)
You just need to talk to people. Seriously, find someone you trust and just spill your heart out. It makes you feel better. And trust me, when I say, that you will get through this. Find something you enjoy doing, find a reason for living. Even when your illness gets you down, think "This is just how I might feel from time to time." and go and do something fun to take your mind off it.
Please try not to worry, and just keep smiling? It sounds hard, but it's easy, I promise. I wish you the best of luck, and i'm always here for a chat if you feel like it!xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hey,
I'm sorry things are hard for you at the moment.
It always hard when you don't have the support of your family; have you tried sitting them down and explaining your feelings to them: So that they realise this is serious?
I can understand how you are feeling when you say that cutting and ODing helps, but they aren't really helping at all, Oding can be extremly dangerous and so can cutting. Have you tried any alternatives; http://www.teenhelp.org/alternatives this may be useful. Not all of them may work for you, but keep trying, you will find one that does eventually; these will help the urges to cut fade.
Maybe you could try talking to an adult you trust such as a teacher- someone who can help and support you. You can do this, you are strong and i believe in you.
If you ever want/need to talk, feel free to PM me,
Take care and stay strong,
Charli
