Found the 'diary' of a very disturbed boy.. What do I do? - February 20th 2012, 07:04 PM

Firstly, I have no idea where the heck this should be posted, so I'll allow the mods to move it to where they feel appropriate.

Anyways, my mother (an architect), had found a diary at a job site quite a few months ago. It's full of incredibly dark, depressing, disturbing- yet intellectual poetry.
She just remembered she had it yesterday, and gave it to me.

To be entirely honest, I don't understand why she'd give it to me. I'm the kind of person who she knows would be very affected by something so.. emotional.
Within the book, this boy, who's name is Mac, talks about everything from hoe he was out of his anti-psychotic medication and is horrified, wants to die, etc- to writing a suicide note.
This book is the writing of a very upset man, and I now feel obligated to find this boy (who is 18), and return it. I want to help him.
But, I don't know how on earth I would be able to do so without him freaking out at the fact that somebody actually read it. Considering how damaged this boy is, I can only imagine how frantically he would have searched ofr it.

But I, being the person I am, can not just hold on to this book that I consider to be the writings of someone who will not be alive much longer.

What should I do? I know that if I put my mind to it, I'll be able to find him.
But should I?

Yes. This boy needs a friend. Maybe you could be the one to ease him out of this dark place.

Hey Jordan,

I've moved this thread to Depression and Suicide as I feel it will get a better response there.

Best of luck!!

You're right. This boy does need a friend. But, you don't need to tell him that you read his work. It might push him farther away from accepting the help that you want to offer him. If you are able to find the author of the diary, let him know that you would like to be his friend and leave it at that. If he wants your help, he will come to you on his own terms. Letting him do that will make him feel more comfortable with you. Good luck!

Aww=( I do think you should try to find him because like everyone else said, he does need a friend. He also is prob very distraut over losing his book. Did your mom find it at a house? If you tell her you'd like to find its owner, maybe she would know how.

My mom found it at one of her job sites, she assumed it belonged to a worker. After reading it, and realizing the owner's name was Mac, she went around as casually as she could, asking if anyone knew of this boy. Nobody had any clue who Mac was..

Mac might not be his name, it might be just a name he used. Was it found at a house or was it just found at a building. If it was found in a house you might be able to trace the owner of the diary ect. by finding out where they moved to and sending it to them with a letter or something.
