Trying to find motivation - March 6th 2012, 08:00 AM

So to start things off, I just want to say I have had chronic depression in the past, and made my way through it by living each day as it came, and numbing out my fears of the future.

Well the future came. I am in college, already 2 years in. I am a complete and total fuck up. I am smart, enough so that my parents were planning on Stanford as my college of choice. However I fell in love with Film.

There isn't a day that goes by that I actually do homework though. I miss classes, I don't do well on tests if I am not there for the lectures, and my dream job is not going to happen. I am not motivated at all to do a fucking thing. I don't know what happened to me, but I'm not motivated enough to find out. How do you motivate yourself to do things that are necessary?

Hey there,

Motivation is a hard thing and there are a few ways to approach it. The most simple, and often overlooked, method is to just do it. You got to go to class? Go. Got homework? Do it. Simple as that. You have the power and overall choice as to whether or not you do what has to be done, so when it comes to that choice, just choose to do it. It's not that hard. If you cant be bothered, just doit anyway. When its over you'll feel better about yourself and your future.

Alternatively, I find that preparing myself over a period of time before hand can really help when it comes down to actually doing what needs to be done. Take a piece of homework for example. You do it in the evening and prepare yourself for it throughout the day. I do this my reminding myself that I will get through it. It's just a piece of homework. It needs to be done but once it is, then it's over. When it comes to actually doing the homework you're already mentally prepared to do it and stress will probably be less likely too.

As well as this, try to avoid distractions while you have to do things like that. Go into a room on your own away from people who are talking, turn the TV off, if you work with music try classical (it's meant to be good for brain power or something?) and if not, turn your music off too. Get down to it, and then afterwards you're free.

Honestly though the best way to do this is to just get on with it. It seems stupid and like such a pointless answer but it honestly is the best way to do what has to be done.

I hope this has helped! Let me know if I can help anymore or just send me a PM or something.
Take care,

books, art, cinema, wine, and so onó
are the things you need to live
