Feeling depressed for multiple reasons. - April 16th 2012, 10:11 PM

Hey there, I'm new to the forum so, Hey.

I've been relatively happy with my life until about 3 years ago. I had been training with a football(soccer) team and I decided to quit. Since then the arguments in my house between me and my dad have been unbearable. He likes to start arguments over things that he knows I'll argue with him about and it's constant. After quitting the training it's gotten worse and worse and I've am fed up with it. not only that, I am expected to do well in school but it's just something that I've started losing interest in and my grades are dropping. I have told my mum that I want to drop out before the exams in May but she won't let me. (I'm in 5th year of school in Scotland so I can leave whenever.) Also, people who I call friends are constantly annoying me easier and easier and one of them constantly punches me which they actually hurt and he doesn't know his strength. Also, this one friend who I consider to be my best friend has suddenly started being incredibly annoying to me. I am a straight guy and there is this one person who constantly hugs me against my will and acts all homosexual around me which I hate. I've thought about suicide to stop it but I couldn't face actually doing it. I hate having to go to school and I really don't want to do the end of year exams. Any help would be appreciated and I look forward to your messages.

Hi David,

You didn't give a lot of detail, but it really sounds like something's going on for you...you've changed, your motivation (school, footie) is diminished, and your tolerance for social/interpersonal things is, too. Why?

Maybe dad's hostility might be the result of his recognizing these changes and not knowing how to respond, maybe his actions reflect his confusion and his belief that you've made a mistake...he's got a reaction, but you need to get to the underlying feelings. You might try very calmly asking him why he's provoking and antagonizing you, and see if you can't have some direct conversation about that. In the absence of direct talk, feelings come out thru actions (like his provocations)...talk about the real issue, and the indirect expression of them often stops.

PM me with the link of the post you'd like me to respond to.
