Question Which dog is perfect? - May 5th 2012, 09:04 AM

I have always wanted to have a dog as a pet but my Dad always refused. Finally, I have managed to convince him. But I'm just so confused! Which breed would be JUST right? We're considering bulldog, pug, Labrador, beagle or a golden retriever. But mostly this "consideration" is based on their looks. Basically, we need a medium-sized dog with good temperament which can be easily trained. And it should be friendly with other pets too as I have a rabbit and 2 budgies. My mom wouldn't be able to take much care of the dog as she is not keeping well, so it's mostly up to me. And this would be my first dog. So, I just wanna get a second opinion from dog-owners out there. Which dog would be perfect for me?
Thanks! xx

PUG. Mainly because they're so adorable and if I didn't already have 6 dogs, I'd totally convince my parents to let me have one

I'd say though, go for the dog you want the most. I'm sure if you start to train it as soon as you can, you'll manage to do and as for getting on with other pets, I'd say it depends on the dog but we got new dogs and our current one didn't seem happy with it at first but now they're fine, it's just a chance of waiting it out till they're use to them.

If you want a dog good with other animals, easily trained, and not too big I would honestly suggest any sort of collie.

Re: Which dog is perfect? - May 5th 2012, 05:10 PM

I actually wouldn't suggest any kind of collie as they are hearding dogs and will try to heard things (smaller animals, kids etc...or bigger animals) :S if they don't get enough excersize. Probably a pug would be your best bet except you have to clean its wrinkly nose with a tissue and socialize then from a puppy with other animals, sometimes they can become jealous...other than that a pug would be just fine.

Just google "dog breeds" for more information if you need.

I've never had that problem with my dog other than with children and he's a border collie. I had a kitten and he was perfectly fine with her, treated her like another puppy. All medium sized dogs need their exercise but saying he'll herd other animals because its a cattle dog is kind of a leap. That's like saying a poodle will hunt other animals because its a hunting dog.
As long as it grows up around these other types of animals from being a puppy it wont do anything to them, even if it tries proper training can easily correct that.

My dog is a cavalier king charles spaniel. He's perfect, honestly. He's beautiful, trained fairly easily, amazingly good with children, the friendliest thing ever, small. I know you weren't considering a spaniel, but cavaliers are wonderful breeds

I think the friendliest dogs are Golden Retrievers and Labradors. They are known to be family dogs, so judging by that I would say that they have good temperament. Plus they are just so adorable! I love Golden's the best, especially when they are puppies

I have a Havashu. He's ADORABBBBLE and was very easy to train.
He's about 12 pounds now and 15 pounds is his max weight so pretty small
He is super playful too and really makes great company when I get depressed.
I say havashu.

Re: Which dog is perfect? - May 6th 2012, 03:34 AM

I've owned basically every breed of dog and honestly I've found the best ones are mixed ones, like pound dogs I know some people are uncomfortable with that but they always give you the most love and they have always been fantastic dogs however if you are looking for a pure bred one, I would suggest cocker spaniels, they are wonderful dogs, they are loveable, easy to look after, not too big, they are energetic and good with other animals, although they are "hunting" dogs usually used for birds, I've had 3 and they have always been really good with the birds in my house. Whatever chose you make, make sure you have researched the breed and its needs and evaluate whether it will be a good choice for you and your household. good luck

You completely missed the point of what I said. They're known to heard kids and other animals if they don't get enough excessive. I didn't say specifically every individual animal itself will. It IS common though among that breed, it's in their blood to heard things. When dogs get bored with everyday life, they find ways to amuse themselves, often in ways be don't like. Be it chewing shoes, chasing cats, cars or herding kids. It depends on the breed really.

Re: Which dog is perfect? - May 7th 2012, 03:58 AM

We just got our Puppy in Feb.
We chose a Lab mix.

We got her when she was 9 weeks old, she is now just hitting 5 months old.
Since we got her, she has learned the following
-Sit
-Stay
-High Five
-Shake
-Hug <---- Big one since she loved to jump all over everyone I started to teach her only to jump up when one of us gives her the command to hug. She has done really well with this one.
-Lay down

She has also been working on letting me know when she needs to go outside by letting out at least one mellow bark but nothing more then two mellow barks.

We have two cats, she does well with them, but the cats really want nothing to do with her most of the time lol.

We also have one 4 year old son, and they get a long great.

Do your research on all of the dogs your are considering, and then also do your research on mixed breeds (if you know the mixes) Go to your pound/animal shelter and meet with a few pups as well.

Okay so after having this long and detailed conversation with the breeder and vet, I decided to get a Beagle. Thank you everyone for your awesome suggestions, btw! <3 And I know Beagles used to hunt rabbits and all, but I figured that the puppy would eventually get used to it. xx

Beagles are great dogs! My best friend has a beagle and he's an incredibly well-behaved dog. Well...he doesn't like me, but that's another story. I'm sure you'll make a great owner. Have fun with your new pet.

Thanks! I just hope I'd be able to take its care properly.
