I think my Cat hates me... - February 7th 2014, 05:09 AM

Two weeks ago I got a 3 year old cat from the Humane Society. Hes sweet and playful, but im feeling like hes to playful or is he turning mean? When I try to pet him he rolls onto his back grabs my hand and bites, but not hard....some times he gets rough. Another thing bothering me is that he climbs on things and runs all over the condo chasing my grandmas cats. He is my first pet and im not used to cats. Is this normal behavior? Should I be worried? Is he turning or is mean?.....

Hey there!

Congratulations on adopting your first pet!

It sounds like he just wants to play. I have three cats, and they often roll on their backs and softly bite when they want to play. They'll also chase each other to get a rise out of each other. I'd say it's normal, and as he gets older, he'll calm down.

But, if it seems to be that they're fighting, it may be best to enclose your cat in another room for a while before slowly introducing him to the other cats.

I agree with Cassie. I've had a lot of experience with cats/kittens, and with mine, they always roll over and grab my hand when they wanna play. They also chase each other as well. I don't think he's turning mean, just try and take your time with him. Usually as cats get older, they'll dial the playfulness down a bit.

Lastly, congratulations on your first cat.

My two young cats will do that. However, I wouldn't encourage your cat to treat your hand like a toy (trust me, those claws will tear your skin up) so if you can give you cat a toy to play with I'm sure he'll be happy. My cats are also climbers and I've learned to tolerate some climbing areas around the house for them to perch like the entertainment center and bookshelves. But, if you can give a more appropriate cat perch such as the towers they sell for cats to climb on I'd settle with that. Chasing the other cats....this is a problem I have with my own tom that irritates me. I think it's just that energy young cats have that they look for something to help release it.

This behavior is absolutely normal, he's just being a cat. When cats roll on their back like that, it's like hunting/eating prey so his instinct is to bite you, but be careful doing that because he could do some damage, I agree that if you get a toy and play with him it will save your hands and give him something else to beat up on.

The chasing is also normal, but keep an eye on them to make sure none of them get too aggressive, and yes the running around drives me crazy too. Mine will just suddenly decide to run through the house at warp speed and scare us half to death! We've learned to live with it.

Some cats climb, others don't. Depending on where he's climbing, it's more annoying than anything else. I would get him some kind of tower or cat perch to sit on (it doesn't have to be huge) and put it near the window so he can see out. Apparently to cats, looking out the window is like watching TV.
