My goldfishy is floating on his side... :'( - April 14th 2014, 07:03 PM

Horatio is not my only goldfish but he's my favourite and he's always been quite active, but the last couple of days he's been a bit depressed and not eating much. Had a look in the tank a few minutes ago and he's just floating on his side near the bottom...he's still breathing but he's not really responding to anything, even when the other fish nudges at him. I think it might be more than swimbladder.

Do I need to start preparing myself for a heart-breaking goodbye??

I am no expert in this field, but I know that when a fish is floating on a side, it's not a good sign.

I played him his favourite Pharrell Williams song and he perked up for a minute, but then went back to floating.

How long have you had him? Could be old age.

And here you are living, despite it all.

If he's on his side, he's likely not going to make it. It is nearly impossible to help a fish once it starts floating. What you described reminds me of my last Betta, though. His mentality was getting so poor that it was like he had fish-Alzheimer's. Couldn't remember that I just put food in his tank, forgot how to follow the tip of my pen. He was a mess, but he was reaching his life expectancy.

I would just quarantine him to make him more comfortable. The other fish nipping at him is probably stressing him out. If you think it might be disease, there are some medicines you could try.

I've only had him three months, he was given to me. I put him in a separate bowl to stop the other fish kicking him and he's actually perked up a lot since then, less baleful floating and a bit more swimming... and upright chilling.

Sorry to hear this! I hate when any of my pets are ill. Since he's swimming a little more, then that's a good sign. Keep an eye on him. I hope he starts doing a little better soon!

We had a bit of a relapse and he actually died yesterday. Pretty gutted, he was my first ever pet and a great little guy.

Aw, I'm sorry to hear that. It's always sad to have a pet die but I'm sure he enjoyed the time he spent with you

I'm sorry! It's always hard to lose a pet, no matter how small. I hope you're okay.
