My cat wont stop! - May 17th 2014, 03:26 AM

I keep my cat in my room with me at night, he claws at the carpet and doesnt listen when I yell at him to stop! My Grandma says I should sleep with my door slightly open so I he can come in and out but I cant sleep with my door open. Ive tried everything! No scratch spray, putting a rug over where he sratches....but nothing works! What can I do?!

Hi there! When my cat is in trouble and doing something that she's not supposed to be doing, we'll normally shake something loudly or ring a bell. She'll immediately stop and look at us. Eventually, she learned not to jump up on certain things or she would hear a noise that she didn't like. We still use noise occasionally to keep her out of trouble when she goes to her bad habits again. It might also be better if your cat doesn't stay in your room at night, although I understand wanting to keep pets in your room! I hope this helped a little! Good luck.

^ I agree. Maybe you can get a scratching post. I got a scratching bed thing with a dangling catnip toy and my cats stopped scratching up the couch.

Cats are like kids. They each respond to different techniques. But he definitely has to associate the behavior with something he doesn't like. Also, tones of voice really help, I find that cats react the same way that humans do to happy and angry (not yelling) voices. I say my cats name a certain way each time they do something undesirable. Now, if I see the cat about to do something that I don't want them to do, I just say the name and they will respond to me by meowing and stop whatever it was.

I also had a cat that would jump on my curtains and whenever he did that, I put him outside of my room. He eventually learned not to because he likes to stay in the room with me.

Have you ever tried a spray bottle? When ever they are scratching something you don't want you just quickly squirt them once and they usually stop. Each cat is different though. A loud noise may help one cat, while it won't another. Try out different things and see what seems to work best. Sooner or later your cat will get the idea that it doesn't need to be scratching certain things.

I don't have cat's but we do have dogs. And when they bark or do something we don't want them to we have a can of air that makes noise and it makes them stop. It's called pet corrector but I don't know if it would work for your cat. We also squirt are dogs with a water bottle and they tend to stop what they are doing. I also agree with other people that maybe you should get a scratching post and put it over the spot where he scratches and maybe he will use that instead of scratching the carpet.

Don't lose who you are, in the blur of the stars
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It's okay not to be okay
Sometimes it's hard, to follow your heart
Tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising,
Just be true to who you are
