Vet Visit :( - October 24th 2014, 09:02 PM

I have to take Alfonso to the vet tomorrow.

The past week so she's been really itchy down her left side, she keeps trying to rub herself against the side of the cage, and scratching herself every way she can reach. It's not just an occasional thing, it's happening every time I look in on her. She's gotten really antisocial too and has bitten me three times this week which is so unlike her. She's usually so tame and friendly but she's so jumpy whenever I go near her and the slightest noise startles her so much she's even made a noise like a broken squeaky toy. :/

I called the vet today because this is so out of character for her. They said to take her in to the open clinic tomorrow morning so they can have a look, which she won't like at all because it's at 11am and she usually goes to bed when I'm getting up around 7am. The woman I talked to thinks it's probably a mite and the fact she's itchy all the time is making her grumpy and antisocial. I hope it's that simple, I'd hate to think something was wrong with my little fuzzball.
It's only going to get worse when bonfire night comes, the people in the houses behind ours always go way over the top with their fireworks and my room is about 50 yards from their back gardens. We're hoping that moving her into the space down the side of the couch in the living room that night might stifle the worst of the bangs so she doesn't get too freaked out.

My poor baby, I hope she's okay.

Oh, no, poor Alfie! I hope it's something as simple as mites. Poor baby. :hugs:

Well first off it's finally confirmed that she's a girl so that's good.
She was a bit enflamed down one side where she's been scratching so the vet gave me some stuff to drop down her back today and then again in two weeks. Also need to thoroughly disinfect her cage.

I'm so glad it was something minor, though at £25 I dread to think what something more serious would have been.
Thankfully she's alright so I'm happy.

Glad to hear it wasn't anything serious!

Could you get pet insurance?

Aw, I'm glad everything is okay! She's adorable.

There is nothing pretty about damage, about pain, about heartache.
What is beautiful is their strength, their resilience, their fortitude
as they display an ocean of courage when they pick through the
wreckage of their life to build something beautiful brand new,
against every odd that is stacked against them.” — Nikita Gill

I'm glad she's okay Louise.

Don't lose who you are, in the blur of the stars
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It's okay not to be okay
Sometimes it's hard, to follow your heart
Tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising,
Just be true to who you are

Thanks guys! I put the ointment on her and she looked like she had a racing stripe.

The pet insurance... I don't know how to make this sound not horrible. Basically because of generations of inbreeding resulting in very weak genetics, hamsters only really have a life expectancy of about two years now. I don't want to say pet insurance wouldn't be worth it, because that sounds like I don't care about her. I would question how helpful it'd be for me to be paying monthly into an insurance account for her when it's unlikely anything serious would happen to her that I couldn't afford to fund. Most insurance companies wouldn't insure a hamster anyway, most of them only tend to do cats and dogs. :/
