Training own Service Dog - December 24th 2014, 06:03 PM

My friend trained her own mental health service dog for PTSD, and I am hoping to do the same thing. Unfortunately, there are not very many non-profits that provide service dogs for non-veterans, so training them myself seems like the best decision available.

Has anyone had experience training a PTSD or other service dog? How much time can I expect to commit to training him?

I'm currently training a dog for service with a halfway house. This is the first time I've trained a service dog. This one is a boxer, 13 weeks old he's learning fast. I usually spend around 6 hours a day with him, with 1 hour of that being to train. However. Since this is tu be for PTSD your main focus would be on empathy. Start with a female dog such as a golden retriever and bring her into petsmart for obedience training (this will give the dog the correct paperwork cheaply) and bond with her and encourage her to be protective of you and to comfort you. Most of this will come natural to a golden retriever as they are extremely empathetic and protective animals.
