Bentley Has A Wound - February 9th 2016, 12:27 AM

So over the weekend or before Bentley somehow took a chunk of his skin off just above his nose. He has a long nose (collie nose) anyways, it was small and didn't think much of it. I put anti-bacterial cream on it, which he licked off.

He's rubbing his nose on things causing blood everywhere and irritated and bigger than it was before. I put his dome on him to prevent him from scratching it. I tried to put a bandage on with anti-bacterial cream but after spending 10 minutes I gave up.

I am unsure what to do. Part of it are scabbing but he rubbed it causing it to get bigger. He is licking it and not sure if that is bad, but he can't rub his nose cause of the dome over his head.

I was thinking of calling the vet tomorrow and asking if they have advice. I don't want it to get infected and I'm not sure how it would look infected cause it's open, like red fleshy like looking, pink I guess but darker. Not sure how to tell if a wound is infected for a dog.

Anyways, any advice would be wonderful.

How large is it? It sounds like he does need seen by a vet to prevent infection.

Also, keep him from licking it. One, he could cause an infection by licking it. And two, he will keep reopening it by licking.

Are his gums really pale? They should be a dark pink. If they are a very pale pink or white, he has an infection and needs seen as soon as possible.

It wasn't large or big just I was scared of it getting bigger. Anyways, he had his cone/dome thing around his head for two days. Which helped him not to scratch at it, I could tell it bothered him. Today it doesn't look bright pink/red in colour, but normal, like his skin colour and his fur is growing on top of it a little bit.

I am hoping he won't bother with it, but it doesn't look like it's irritating him anymore or infected. Hopefully by next week it will be cleared up and no one would notice that it was even there.

If it's not looking as inflamed you're probably safe in terms of infection, but keep an eye on it. Keep the cone on till it's fully healed so he can't re open it, and if it gets any worse take him to the vets. I hope he's ok soon
