Rats? - March 31st 2016, 06:40 PM

Has anyone here ever had or have a rat? I'm considering getting one but I don't know if I should or not - are they mean? Do they bite? Do they have good temperaments? I hear that they're friendlier and easier than hamsters, is that true as well?

I plan on getting one from a pet store, I know, probably a bad call, but that's really the only place around here that I can get them.

Re: Rats? - March 31st 2016, 11:30 PM

Hi there,

I haven't personally owned a rat (although it will hopefully be the next pet I get) so my experience is limited, but I thought I'd offer my thoughts anyway.

If bred and raised correctly, rats should not be "mean". If they've been handled enough they also shouldn't have a tendency towards biting. When you go to pick out your rat, if you choose to get one, I would recommend talking to the staff there and asking them about the rat's history, such as whether it's been handled, how old it is, etc. Properly bred and handled rats should have good temperaments. I can't weigh in on how they compare to hamsters as they don't actually have the latter in my country, but hopefully someone else should be able to answer that.

There's a particular THer I'm thinking of who has a lot of experience with rats, so I'm hoping if she's still around the site she'll give her input on this. Other than that, I can say that rats can definitely be good pets, under the right circumstances.

If you do decide to go ahead and get one, we will of course expect pictures to be posted in the forum.

Well, that makes sense then. I'd recommend starting a new thread for your guinea pig, as the title "Rats?" may not draw in people who want to look at pictures of piggies. Let me know if you do want this thread closed.
