I've been doing some research on owning a few hens as companions and for a convenient source of eggs. But in my studies I haven't exactly had the opportunity to talk to someone who actually owns a hen(s) yet. So I'm curious if anyone has one(some) and would be willing to talk about them a little in a reply. I'm mostly interested in their general temperament, what breed you would suggest for 4-seasons outdoor weather, and if you enjoy owning hen(s).
Thanks. |

My friend Shelby owns 2 hens and a rooster. I could probably answer your questions as I am over there almost constantly.

I have 2 pet hens!!
They are AMAZING! You wouldn't believe how friendly they are. I love owning them and would very strongly suggest rescue hens. Don't be put off by how they look when you first get them they soon turn into beautiful hens and their eggs are delicious. I've rescued 4 battery hens. But only have 2 now. They're called Rose and Honey and I used to have Lucy and Nugget. They are definitely part of the family. They're very cheap to look after and they eat a lot of kitchen scraps. They come when they're called and love nothing better than a cuddle. They go to bed on their own but be sure to lock them in so the foxes don't get them. PM me for ANY information. Chickens are possibly my FAVOURITE topic I could go on forever.xxx Just kiss me. ![]() |
