Pets in clothes... - May 27th 2009, 03:58 PM

How do you feel about people who dress up their pets?
It is more common in small animals, small dogs, cats and ferrets. I have even seen rabbits dressed up.

I hate it, when you see dogs in clothes they always look so uncomfortable. Some of the things are so stupid too like pajamas, dresses and shoes.
One thing I have found is completely ridiculous is a pram for a dog.
http://www.petlondon.net/shop/acatal...Bag_Black.html

My dog is too big for all of those clothes but I would never dress her up in clothes. One Christmas we got her a dog Christmas stocking and there was a Father Christmas hat in there. We put in on her and straight away she shook it off and ripped it to pieces.

My Auntie's dog has a coat but his fur is quite long so if he get wet it knots and causes more hassle than it is worth. He only wears it for walking in the rain and it doesn't bother him too much because he hates the rain.

One argument always used is "The dog doesn't mind" or "The dog likes it" but the dog can't talk so they don't know really.

Unless it's for a medical purpose, it's just idiotic and almost always stressful to the animal...
It's just so stupid.

I find it stupid to dress them up for no reason. However, when the dog is in a colder environment than it was meant to be, putting clothes on it to keep it warm is okay. Otherwise the poor thing will be freezing.

I agree with all of the above. I think it is OK for older or more fragile dogs to wear - proper coats (that do a job)

But people that dress they're pets up as fashion items, or put they're dogs in handbags - it is cruel, they shouldn't be allowed to own dogs.

For heavens sake - it's a dog - they are meant to live outside!

Re: Pets in clothes... - May 27th 2009, 05:55 PM

I can understand if you have a small dog with short hair in the winter time that you put a sweater on to keep him/her warm. I had a beagle that was so fat that her boobs would drag through the snow and she would get uncomfortably cold, so we would put a sweater on to keep her warm and keep her boobs up and out of the way, but that was only for her comfort and only when she would go outside. Otherwise, I see no point in it. It's silly to parade them around in clothing. They have a natural fur coat. Doing it in the name of fashion and cuteness is just idiotic.

Dogs are wild animals and should not be treated as accessories.

However, I did used to have a jumper from when I was really young that we put on the dog when our heating wasn't working one winter. He stopped shivering once it was on so that was fine, and he seemed fairly comfortable in it.

My gosh I can't stand it.
My friend's little sister wants to be that girl from legally blonde, so her parents bought her a little rat thing, and she dresses it up all the time and I have the urge to snap at her... seriously I can't stand it.

I hate seeing clothes on dogs. They just don't look very happy to me. However, if the dog is cold then for heaven's sake put some clothes on him. I don't want an animal to freeze because I don't like his sweater.

My little sister wanted me to knit a sweater for her dog. With colorwork. A sweater that I'd probably put 60 plus hours of work into. No thank you. She got a harsh no. If I knit, it is for me or my enjoyment. I get a lot of crap about knitting washcloths when I won't knit her dog a sweater, but I don't see anyone trying to rip my washcloths to shreds or rolling in nasty things with them on their bodies like I know the dog would do.

I don't really mind.
If it's like 'dress him up, take a picture, take in the cuteness and quickly whip off the clothes' i don't think it's that bad as long as the dog doesn't mind.
But dog shoes? No way. That's just wrong.
And i hate when they get carried around in handbags. Dogs usually like walking! Jeez.
But, sticking them in a hat for xmas is very cute

Just kiss me.

I don't dress my dog up just for the hell of it, but she has pretty short hair, so when we take her out in the cold, we put a jacket on her. But I'd never put clothes on her to dress her up and try to make her look cute.

Guilty. *grins sheepishly*.
I have a chihuahua/pomeranian mix, and when he was little, he had to wear clothes or else he would get really cold outside. He was so tiny, we had to cut the toe part off a sock and use rest as a sweater lol. Now, he's a bit bigger and can handle the cold better, but I'm still sometimes guilty of putting the occasional doggy t-shirt on him. He's my baby, and he likes any kind of attention. I usually only dress him up in the colder weather though. Confession: I used to dress up my cats. :-P They hated it though, so I stopped.

Re: Pets in clothes... - May 28th 2009, 06:06 AM

>_> I don't think it's wrong on some occasions. I mean, if the dog is obviously miserable in the clothing, then by all means take it off. But if the dog seems happy and content in it, then go ahead and put it on them.

We have a weenie dog and, poor dog, his belly drags the ground. So during winter when it snows/sleets, he refuses to go outside and use the bathroom. So we put him in a sweater to make it a littler more bearable.

My aunt's dog goes with my uncle to hunt- because she's a daddy's girl and likes to be where my uncle is. From far away she looks like a wild dog/wolf. My aunt doesn't want her to get shot, so she puts a orange jacket on her so that no one will shoot her.
