Good thoughts needed for Eclaire and Frodo! - May 28th 2009, 04:21 AM

So, this may sound insignificant to some people, but a couple of my (pet) rats are sick. Eclaire has cancer, and she's not going to live for much longer. She has 2 cancerous tumors that are growing quickly, and without treatment they will immobilize her and kill her. Even with surgery, it will only buy her at best a few months. The vet can only do one tumor removal at a time though, because she doesn't think that Eclaire would make it if she tried to do too much at once. So my little Claire-bear is going in for her 1st surgery tomorrow morning, and she really needs good thoughts. This will basically determine the rest of her life...

And then Frodo, one of my other rats, has a really bad case of pnemonia. He's been fighting a cold for a few months now, and despite medication, it turned into pnemonia, and he has been really struggling to breathe for the past few days. When I go into the vets tomorrow for Claire's surgery, I'm going to ask the vet if there are any stronger medicines available. If not, I'm going to get him put to sleep later in the day, so he can pass peacefully and not suffer anymore.

I know this is kind of an odd thread--usually people post about their dogs and cats and whatnot. But I have a wide variety of pets, and my rats mean just as much to me as my dog. And it's really upsetting when they get sick..

So send good vibes to Eclaire and Frodo--they could sure use them.

Thanks. Eclaire is in surgery right now, depending on how it goes I should be able to pick her up tonight. And they are going to start Frodo on some new medication, so I'm hoping that it works!! *fingers crossed*

Re: Good thoughts needed for Eclaire and Frodo! - May 28th 2009, 11:30 PM

Ok, well, I called the vet at 2:30, and she said that she just removed the first tumor, and it went wonderfully, so she was going to go ahead and remove the other one. I called her back later, and she said that both removals went beautifully, and Eclaire was doing well. Best part is, they're only going to charge me for 1, and they're not going to charge me to keep her overnight. So that just saved me $160 at least.
So tomorrow at about 1:30 I'll go pick her up, as well as Frodo's new medicine. =]

They really should give you a discount at the vets. You bring in a lot of business with those animals and I'm sure you spread word about how awesome the vet is.

I'm so glad to hear that she is doing well.

They do give me discounts, which I love. It kind of sucked though. Today I found out that my favorite vet (there's 2), is moving to Florida. So she won't get to see/treat my rats anymore. I like the other vet too, but I just get along better with this one, and she really knows my animals.

Eclaire came home today! She's doing really well, so I hope she continues to improve! She looks to tiny without the tumors, but I'm so glad they're gone. I had to put her in a tank, and she's monkeying around so muh that I'm SO paranoid that she's going to escape! I hav weights on the tank, but girl rats get insanely horny (i'm not even kidding!), an I'm worried she might find a wa to get out and have a little slumber party with the boys next door! That's all I need is for her to get pregnant.

I picked up Frodo's meds today, and he's had one dose so far. It's too early to tell if it's going to work, but he can't really get any worse and still be alive, so I'm optimistic. Anything would be an improvement.

Keep those good thoughts coming!
