My cat - October 29th 2018, 06:32 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of death or grieving, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

I have a very elderly cat who has been in our family for 18 years. Unfortunately, Salem has been going downhill for past couple of years and we are getting closer to having to make that dreadful decision.

He has been blind in one eye for quite a while after an injury many years ago, but more recently, he has developed a massive cataract in one eye, which the vet has said may get worse and cause him a lot of pain, in which case, he would need to be euthanised. My dad doesn't want him to undergo surgery as he is elderly and probably wouldn't survive, and to be honest I agree with him. However, I couldn't bear the thought of his last moments being in agony and would rather him go peacefully surrounded by his family before that happens. He also has arthritis, which gets worse during the winter.

It isn't just physical problems. He has been urinating indoors when before he always used to go outside, he forgets that he's been fed and where his food bowl is, he cries a lot (especially during the night) and occasionally has moments where he 'blanks out'. Our vet said that he is likely suffering from Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome, basically feline dementia. There isn't really anything we can do about it other than give him a comfortable life, but although he isn't in any obvious pain, he is clearly suffering and my dad has his own medical issues and is struggling to look after him. Rehoming isn't an option as it wouldn't be fair at his age and spending his last days in an unfamiliar environment would only cause him distress.

We haven't yet made the decision, but we are going to discuss it as a family and decide what would be best for Salem. I'm almost certain everyone will agree that the kindest thing to do would be to put him to sleep, but I'm absolutely dreading it. My parents adopted him as a kitten two months before I was born and he has been there for the whole of me and my sister's lives and losing him would be like losing a brother. I don't know how I will cope. I know I would want to be in the room with him when it happens, but I will probably break down, and I read somewhere that cats can sometimes sense when their owners are upset and become distressed. I'm also worried about the needle hurting him. He's very fractious and it is hard to hold him still. When my mum's guinea pig was put to sleep, he was anaesthetised and didn't feel anything, but I don't know if it would be the same for cats.

I will update once we have discussed it but right now, I'm too upset to write any more. I would appreciate any advice on how to make his final moments as comfortable as possible.

I don't have any advice since I'm not a pet owner, but just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about your cat. It must be a really difficult decision to make, and very upsetting seeing as your cat has been with you for all of your life.

Keep us updated if it helps

I am so sorry for your pet, maybe she is already preparing to leave. Usually cats and dogs do just that. Passed on his own experience and it is very difficult.

Hi there,

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat.

Last year, I had to put my dog down so I empathise on how it feels.

If you need anything, please let me know.

Thank you to everyone who replied. I think we are just going to see how he goes for now. We are hoping to give him one last Christmas, providing his arthritis doesn't get worse.

Sad update. Salem has suddenly taken a turn for the worst and we've made the decision to put him to sleep tonight. We will all be with him when it happens. I will update tomorrow or at some point when it's all over.

Thank you

Salem passed away peacefully last night surrounded by his family. It was a difficult decision but it was for the best. I will miss him terribly.

Losing a cat or pet is like a losing a family member. I am so sorry you had to go through this.
