How to get your guinea pig to eat veggies? - December 5th 2018, 10:01 PM

I have a guinea pig whose about 2 years old and she refuses to eat veggies. The only thing she'll eat is her hay and pellets. Everything else is a no no. I put a small bowl in her cage with a piece of raw broccoli, cauliflower, carrot and brussel sprout. I've doing this for 3 days and she hasn't taken a bite. I've been trying to get her to eat veggies since earlier this year. I've tried slices of green peppers, strawberries(know that's not a veggie but still) and no success. Her vet is stressing this issue and i tried telling him that she won't take it.

What about cutting the veggies up into really small pieces and add them to the hay or pellets and see if your guinea pig eats it? Or when handling your guinea pig, perhaps hand feed a little bit of veggies?

Keep trying!

Some guinea pigs are picky. The last one I had wasn't picky at all though, which made it easier for me. You might just have to keep trying different foods to see what she likes.

Maybe you could try something with a higher water content, like some cucumber? You could also try spinach or romaine lettuce. Mine used to love that.

When I look into the eyes of an animal
I do not see an animal
I see a living being
I see a friend
I feel a soul.

They whispered to her
you cannot withstand the storm
she whispered back
i am the storm.

Iíve always been lucky that mine have always like veggies. You could always try chopping veggies up really small and put it in a bowl with some pellets. This way they will get accustomed to the taste (replace food though, you will end up wasting some pellets but at least they may eat veggies). Only do this for one veggie at a time. If they eat the chopped pieces, then offer them a bigger piece of it, if not go back to chopping for a few days before trying again. They may take to new foods slowly especially if theyíre older and havenít been exposed/taught to eat veggies. Make sure you donít leave the veggies in the cage too long either. Start by offering lettuce that is not iceberg and introduce new things slowly.

I think animals are smarter than humans. If you do not want to eat, then this product is not needed. Leave slices of vegetables in a cage for choice. That is quite enough.
