Fishies - May 9th 2019, 09:29 PM

So I recently set up a 20 gallon tank, it is now fully cycled (I put some gravel from a friend's tank in there), and ready for fish! I definitely want a coolie loach and four or five danios, and I have a pleco already. What are some great fish you recommend? I read up that coolie loaches, danios, and plecos are great tank mates for any fish, so I'm not worried about that. I was thinking possible some neon tetras or even gourami's? OH! Here is a picture of the tank if that helps

Thanks!

So, now I have four zebra danios, a coolie loach, pleco, and two male fancy guppies. I want two more. I was thinking maybe some larger peaceful fish, since I have so many little ones.

Hey,

Just a heads up, Kuhli loaches should be in schools of at least three or more. Kuhli loaches also need places to hide (like rocks or caves and driftwood and préfère live plants) but make sure the items you’re using don’t have sharp edges. They actually préfère sand over gravel (so they can burrow) but if that isn’t possible than make sure you’re using gravel that is smooth (no jagged edges) and finer. This is because they don’t actually have scales so you want to be careful they don’t do any damage to themselves. You also want to make sure there isn’t any small holes that they can fit through in the tank to prevent them from escaping! And make sure your filter will not allow them to get in and get stuck. They’re super sneaky and can fit in small places.

Zebra Danios are schooling fish and they should be kept in a group of at least 5 (this prevents them from getting stressed out which can result in aggression). Unfortunately most of the chain petstores don’t make this clear for those purchasing these fish which can lead to these issues.

I’ve got multiple fish tanks (180, 250 gallon, 300 gallon and then a 50 gallon tank) in my house. I’ll list off what I have in my tank with the kuhli loaches so you can get an idea. However, since you have guppies and danios, you’ll want to avoid fish with longer fins since they will nip at them as well as fish that swim slower. You can always look into tetras or other types of catfish. In the 300 gallon tank, I’ve got live plants and then some drift wood, caves and rocks. For the fish in that tank:

16 Kuhli fish
6 zebra plecos
12 cherry barbs
12 black skirt tetras
6 honey gourami
8 black phantom tetras
8 Buenos Aires tetras
6 Boeseman’s Rainbowfish
12 hatchet fish (they jump so a secure lid is a must!)
12 bleeding heart tetras
12 emperor tetras
10 serape tetras
10 rosy tetras
12 red phantom tetras
8 flame tetras
12 glass bloodfin tetras

9 of the black skirt tetras we have had for 5 years and they are still healthy so my father buys a lot of tetras because not only are they pretty but they live a long time as well. Hope this was helpful and that it helps you to set up the tank properly to make sure you have a happy and healthy fish community.

Lexi, I'd love to see pictures of your tanks! I always like looking at people's set ups.

What you have so far is cool, Court! I like the colors you chose. I have some danios - the "glow" ones - they are in a good sized group and I think I'm going on three years with them. They are spunky little guys. I wish you the best of luck with the fish you choose. Definitely update us with more pictures.
