So, I finally have my chance -
June 25th 2009, 01:34 AM
For my birthday, I'm just going to ask everyone to get me money, and I'm going to buy the following--
10G or 20L Tank Glass Lid 50lb. Bag of Playsand & 3 Eco-Earth Bricks 3 Oyster Shell Halves 1 Coconut 1 Jar of Krill/Shrimp Cuttlebone A Lot of Vegetables Water Dechlorinator Instant Ocean Hemp Climbing Nets Thermometer/Hygrometer Set AND IN MY YARD I SHALL FIND 1 colony of Rollie Pollies (they are the suggested clean-up crew) Can anyone guess what the final item is? 2-10 HERMIT CRABS!!! Needless to say, I'm excited to be part of the crabbing community... ![]() Wish me luck in my quest for crustaceans, and tell me if I forgot anything please! |

I'm sorry to play devil's advocate here, but...
Hermit crabs are very social by nature—in their natural habitats, they live in colonies of up to 100 or more. Which means you're group of 2 to 10 will probably be very lonely. They only live in warm parts of the world and cannot survive in places where the temperature drops too low. They must live in very humid climates because hermit crabs breathe through stiffened gills that are kept moistened by the humidity. They will only lay their eggs in the ocean and will not reproduce in captivity—that means that every crab in every tourist shop and pet store was ripped away from their family, and will not have another. Also, many can live to up to 32 years old when given proper shells to continue growth. Are you really going to keep them until you're like, 50? |

I've researched them intensively, and it seems the size and species I'm getting usually die after 5-6 years.
I know that all are harvested from the wild, and I feel bad about that, but I'm not allowed to get a ferret, and this was my second choice. THEY ARE SO DARN CUTE!!! I'm also aware that they need to be kept in the 80/80 range for temp and humidity. 2-10 crabs I've heard do well because they bond well with one another and that they do best in captivity at this number. I've researched for months and I will ry to provide the best hermie home I can. |

Good for you!!
I've had hermit crabs, they're fun to have. I think between 10-20 would be perfectly fine. Although I definitly reccommend getting the 20 gallon tank--they'll appreciate the extra room. My crabbies were always sweet, I only ever got pinched by one (Her name was Lucifer, Lucy for short ). They're really a cool animal to watch. Put up pics when you get them!! Life isn't about worrying,
That's a waste of time. And life isn't about being perfect, It will never happen. Life is about finding yourself, And finding people who accept that person. . ![]() My PM box is always open! |

Definately will.
I'm super excited. I can't decide what species I want though. Coeobita Rugosus or Coenobita Clypeatus <--Scientific Species Names (Ruggie, Rugosus)---(Purple Pincher, PP) <--Slang Species Names (The pics are in hyperlinks on the scientific species names) |
