Adding another dog to the mix? - June 28th 2009, 12:35 AM

So, I have 56 pets currently, but I'm really hoping to get another dog soon. I have 1 dog already, 3 cats, 2 guinea pigs, a chinchilla, a bearded dragon, 2 toads, and 46 rats. Everyone pretty much gets along. The cats and the dog leave the small animals alone, and the dog and the cats don't have many issues (my dog will get jealous of them and go to bite them sometimes, but he gets in trouble for that so he doesn't do it often).
It's pretty peaceful now, so that's my only concern with getting another dog. I would like another one, and it's reccommended by my counselor, so I can train him to sleep in my room with me at night to help with my anxiety. My current dog is a nearly 6 year old chihuahua/pomeranian mix. He used to sleep with me, but he decided a couple of years ago that he preferred the couch, and that my floor was his new favorite spot to pee. So he's not allowed in my room anymore. He is generally a good dog, but with alot of quirks that all "toy breeds" come with. He is most happy when he is the center of attention, and will growl at and/or bite if someone or something threatens that. He takes his toys, bones, and food seriously and gets mad if the cats go near them. He has never been with other dogs for long periods of time, but he used to run around the yard occasionally with a female sheltie, and he also showed interest in a female german shepard. He does NOT like male dogs.
I really would like to get a (female) pug, but I'm worried that my dog will not welcome another one. How could I introduce another dog, in a way that won't make my dog feel threatened? I know the new puppy would head straight for his toys/bed/food, and that won't be okay with my dog. I just really don't want the new dog to get attacked. Even though my dog chooses not to sleep with me, would he be resentful of having the new dog be allowed in my room while he's not? Would the new dog be able to tell where my dog has peed in my room, and do the same?
If anyone has any advice about making this process any easier, I would appreciate it!

Hm, well I suggest getting some of that pet carpet stain remover stuff, and cleaning the places where your dog peed, or the other dog will do the same. Dogs smell that stuff better than people do, and male dogs especially like to mark their territory.

Your dog might get a bit jealous, but just watch him around a new dog, monitor them at first.Eventually he'll either get along with the new dog, or avoid it. My dog is hostile toward new animals until he gets to know them, usually about a week or so. I don't know if you crate your dog, but maybe crating the new dog at first, might be a good idea. Good luck with the new dog.

I have wood floors, so carpet stain remover wouldn't work. I have a couple of rugs that I could put over it, but I don't know if a dog could still smell it.
We'd be getting a female dog, because my current dog hates boy dogs.
My dog isn't crated, but we do have a crate. The new dog would probably be crated until he is potty-trained, which is what we did with my dog I have now.

Scrub the floor with disinfected, or with something lemon scented, the smell will go away then.

Introducing them slowly is a good idea This will be stressful on the new dog in addition to the animals that you already have. Just introducing them slowly, using positive reinforcement and making sure your dogs are confident but not aggressive. Having a dog by your side is wonderful! Just getting through the "immature" stage is the hard part. Best of luck!

Oh, and crate training is good! Not for more than 3-4 hours during the day though (all night is fine.) You can make a transition from the crate to a short "tie down" on a dog bed to just a dog bed.
