Cat issues..help? - July 19th 2009, 06:56 AM

well i just got a new kitten in the house on friday and my other two cats aren't warming up to it very well..like any time the kitten comes near the other two they hiss at it and just walk off. do you think they will eventually stop this? i tried earlier to get one of my other cats to play with something at the same time the kitten was but when it saw the kitten it ran off like it was freaked out.

this is the kitten its a girl. we're still working on naming it though

sorry about how big the pics are

Hey there,

First off that is a very cute cat; I want it .

I think your cats will probably get used to it after a while. What are your other cats ages and gender? Also, is the kitten fixed? Sometimes when the animals are different genders they have a harder time acclimating (or can) and if one of the animals isn't fixed it could affect the situation.(not always the case though)

I think the best thing to do is to give it time because right now your older cats are asserting their power and making sure that the baby cat knows who is boss but once she is around for a while and they know she knows who is on top( cats!) it will probably get better.

Also, you could probably call your vet and see if he/she has any ideas on how to make the transition a little more steady but I really think time is the best thing.

Best of luck.

~Jenna~

It was the same thing when I got my last cat. Over time they get used to the fact that there is a new member in the family. As long as your other 2 cats aren't very territorial and the kitten doesn't try and take their 'position', everything will go well and they should adjust over time.

one is a boy and one is a girl. the boy is the oldest (not quite sure on the exact year) and the girl is about 2.

no the kitten is not fixed. its probably gonna take just time..my cats don't like when something new is introduced lol

the girl cat is particularly shy and the boy is the dominant cat of my neighborhood. actualy the boy is getting used to it quicker than the girl but that's probably because he realizes the kitten isn't going to dominate him

Cassie's right. My family has 4 cats and its always been the same when a kitten enters the picture. Give it time. And cute cat, by the way! (:

Your new baby kitten is so adorable, so very cute, congrats on the new member of the family
heres a website with names for kittens/cats http://www.kittennames.net/
like all of the people on here have said give it time, make sure your giving equal attention to all the cats and not just giving a ton of attention to just the kitten or the other cats willfeel left out, and the two cats are not used to the new kitten yet but they will get used to her eventually.

thank you for the site but me and my mom actually figured out a name earlier for her Lily!

any way...one of my other cats was actually playing with her today so its getting better. the older female cat is still being shy though. at least she doesn't run and hide like she does when new people come over though. She only lets the kitten come so far before she hisses but i think shes getting better

Hey there,

I am glad things are working out but I have a quick question; are you planning on getting the cat fixed? I am not asking to be mean or anything its just cats can get pregnant at a pretty early age and I think you said you had a boy? And, when a cat goes it to 'heat' (pregnancy mode) they can be really hard to keep in the house ect.

I wouldn't have even brought this up but I didn't fix my cat (my parents agreed to and then lagged) and she ended up getting pregnant(she wasn't an outside cat either she was just really fast).

Just thought I would let you know and once again congrats on the new little kitty and I love the name Lily(my neice named her cat that)

umm idk at the moment about getting her fixed..it depends on if we can afford it. the male cat is fixed though so she won't be getting pregnant. the other female cat we have in the house isn't fixed and all that happens with her is she's really noisy and messes with the boy alot! lol (he got fixed at a later age and he still has the instinct to "do the nasty" with the girl..i woke up to them doing that on my bed one night O.o not fun lol)

actually after my dad wanted to call her tiger and me and my mom wanted to call her lilly we combined the names into tigerlilly (yea i know its a long name lol and all of that went on after i posted that her name was lilly)
