housebreaking - May 2nd 2010, 08:58 PM

So my puppy is 4 months old. (I'm sure you know her from my posts and blogs haha) But anyway, she's totally not housebroken yet. (bear our 1 year old rottweiler was housebroken really fast :/) We will leave the sliding glass door to the backyard open and she will still pee in the house. We put her outside and say NO when she does so that maybe she will get the idea, but apparently not. I love her to death but having to clean it up when she pees on the carpet gets frustrating. Any tips?

make sure that about 5-10 minutes after your puppy eats that you take her outside. you should put her on a lash to take her out so that you have a little more control and dominance over her. after she uses the bathroom outside, make sure that you give her a treat (break a dog cookie in half for this-- you dont want to give her too many cookies haha). dogs only learn off of rewards. unless you catch her in the act of peeing in the house, you cant punish her because dogs dont learn that way. the best thing is to take her outside and give her and treat and tell her that shes a good girl after she has used to the bathroom where she is supposed to. also, if you have to clean up a mess inside, dont let her see you clean it up. when dogs see you cleaning up their mess inside, they think thats its ok.
so remember- reward for positive behavior!
I hope this helps!

unfortunetally, by taking her outside and saying no after she pees in the house doesn't help, unless you say it WHILE she is peeing, puppies (or dogs of any age) can not associate a punishment with an action that happened just seconds before. She will eventually think you are saying no to her being outside or some other random action that you don't intend for her to associate it with. You just have to keep taking her out (a leash works well) and wait until she pee's. After she does give her a treat, praise her, and then let her off the leash. She will then associate peeing with getting freedom. Just remember that puppies pee A LOT so take her out after naps, meals, and playtime. GOOD LUCK!

I agree with the other posts.

Say NO if you catch your dog in the act of peeing, NEVER after, and NEVER outside.
When you dog pee's outside, go really high pitched, and have some play time, and maybe get a really special treat that she doesn't normall have, like fresh chicken or sausage!

What we did with my dog, is started off with putting papers all over the kitchen floor, then we slowly narrowed down the amount of space that would have newspaper, then we brought the news paper outside, and he started peeing outside.

And I will take you in my arms, and hold you right where you belong.
Til the day my life is through, this I promise you.121109
