Lightbulb Irresistible Treats :D - June 23rd 2010, 09:31 PM

Hey Everyone

I'm taking on my biggest challenge so far ....
I'm taking on two pure working spaniels over the summer holidays. They have no recall, and are chasing deer and chickens. This may not sound too bad, but they are scaling 8ft fences and cannot be walked at the moment - so the owners have asked that I spend a a few weeks with them, and instruct them on what they need to do.

I have a brilliant spaniel of my own, with a vice of anything cheesy or livery.

The owners have told me that there is NOTHING, that their dogs will work for
Nonsense!

I'd really like to hear what all your dog's favourite treats are Give me some ideas of what to prepare, liver cake is on the cards at the moment.

Remember, that pork is bad for dogs

So yeah, what would all your pets die for - other pet owners can comment too

Here's one that a lot of people don't think of, cheese. Like, just some normal cheddar cheese, dogs love it.

Our dog likes various things. Denta-Sticks, Marrow Treats, Jerky Treats, and even Peanut Butter. He loves Peanut Butter!

We have Kongs and we will fill them up with peanut butter. Or, we just give them carrots or green beans (they even like frozen green beans).

Yes,. peanut butter is GREAT. Also, do not reward the dog for not behaving. People sometimes do this when they respond to the dog even if you get on to it for not behaving.

The best thing to do when they are chewing ECT is to ignore them.

Some dogs love fruit(which is actually strange) but you can try it. My dog LOVES apples, but she's also a fan of pineapple and even cauliflower. Sometimes food with a stronger scent works better as well, because it gets their attention. When I do agility with my dog I use salami. What about toys? I know lots of people who have special "agility toys" which they only allow the dog to play with when they are training agility(or flyball, or obedience, or whatever.) My dog will forget everything else when she sees a tennis ball, for example.

Yeah, I compete in agility too. I mean, personally, liver cake and cheese along with a squeaky ball does it for my spaniel.
But I've been asked to train these other two spaniels that are starting to chase after deer. So, I'm looking for some REALLY tasty treat ideas

I'll probably cook up some beef and chicken before I go, and get some sausage too. I just need something really stimulating

Cheese always upset my dogs stomach personally, but he LOVED just sausage cooked up. I used that when we first started training him.

My dogs' favorite treats are cheerios actually and I use them quite often when training. When doing recall however, their favorite thing is small pieces of chicken hot dogs.

Sounds like they need a good run before training :P my dog goes nuts over everything including ice cubes, but I have heard of picky dogs going nuts over things like carrots, or maybe you could use something besides food like a favorite toy.

Do not give them bones either unless it is rawhide. They can shallow them and really hurt themselves.

Thanks for all your replies. I'm upcountry training them this week Alls going ok so far..... I have an ice cream tub with bits of cheese, carrot, beef, chicken and spicey sausage

Your right April, they need a really good run before training, trouble is, they'd never come back - thats the problem

I'll just have to see how things go this next week

Peanut butter, beef jerky. We bought ~15lbs of lamb at the farmer's market and got lamb dog treats free that they found absolutely irresistible.

Beggin' Strips taste good (I've tasted them out of curiosity. I'm weird like that)

My dogs have always liked milk bones and bones (we had to stop giving them those though, because they fought over them)

One of my dogs likes ice cubes. she runs to the fridge whenever she hears the freezer door open.

Cheese, peanut butter, apples (My Dachshund likes apples), turkey, I guess dogs will eat almost anything really, but those are just some things I know from experience.

Peanut butter
Cheese

Bandit likes Cheetos, ice cubes, carrots or apples.

They both like cottage cheese.

My dog liked pecans. But you have to be careful with those. Don't let them consume the shell. My Dachshund is pretty good about that. But our Sheltie Mix (who was less than a year old at the time) ate the shells too and got pretty sick.
