Baby mice are born! - June 27th 2011, 11:06 PM

So, some of you may know that my mouse has been quite preggo for awhile. Well today, when I came home from a crappy day at work, I found six new baby mice! Or, I think six. I didn't want to disturb the nest too much and make the mother scared and reject them. It's only been a day, so I'm still really nervous she'll think she'd be a bad mom and eat them or something. ._. Anyway, here are a few pictures for you pet lovers. I'll continue to update for a few days with new pictures once they start growing fur and being cute. Right now they're pink and wiggly little things. =3

Here's a picture of her right before she gave birth. She is VERY pregnant!! Bad quality, but it's the only picture I have where you can see her abdomen.

Here's one of her little nest. I made a nice next box in her lower level so she wouldn't have to crawl up and down, but she insisted on taking all the supplies I set up for her up to the top level to make the whole thing her nest. But, whatever works for her. The old nest is now her toilet O.o

And finally, here is a picture of the gross little cute babies They are afterall, no more than 9 hours old right now, and that's assuming she gave birth right after I left for work. They might only be 3 hours old

I count six, my favorite number in fact. But like I said, I didn't want to disturb or touch the nest much. So there might be more underneath bedding.

Take me seriously.
I dare you.

Baby birds are the ugliest things in the world you'll ever see. But I kind of think they're cute too And yes, I hope the mom doesn't eat them =/ But I can't feed them every two hours like she can so I guess it's just wait and see!

So far mommy hasn't eaten them, the biggest risk is the first day or so. At least they survived one! So, here's day two picture.

So it's hard to tell a difference, but they are bigger. And there is a sixth on in there, it's just hiding. Normally by now if my mice were colored they'd be getting spots today, but my mice are all white so they'll stay pink and wormy for awhile lol

Well, I have some baby seagulls across from my window, they're quite cute, just little balls of fluff at first, but now are almost flying. I found them rather cute. ^^.

Also, please don't have me beaten for this, but they look so much like snake food it's unreal >.>.

They do grow at an astounding rate though. Hope they all survive ^^.

Re: Baby mice are born! - June 29th 2011, 04:07 PM

Hahah, don't worry. I would actually like to find some snake owner nearby to give the boy mice to, since I can't keep anymore than what I've got. The problem with having boys as pets at all is because they will impregnate girls and fight other bucks, so they kind of have to live a lonely life, even though mice are so social. =/ No worries for me, I just let my mice play in a supervised area, or if I can't watch them constantly or they get too... humpy (like usual) I just close the play area and let them play on different sides, but still see eachother and talk or whatever it is mice do.

Rambling aside, most people can't or won't do this, and I wouldn't want to set a little mouse of for a life of solitude. SO, I'm hoping the boys become snake food ._. The girls I might keep Maybe not if all six are girls, but three or so I could do.

And of COURSE feathered birds are cute, I'm talking about the little hairless, featherless birds.

What an odd picture.

Damn that bird looks unhappy >.>.

But ahh, yeah, I get what you mean.
This bit goes in a spoiler tag since it could be upsetting:
Spoiler:
Thing is, if you're giving the mice away to a snake owner, don't freeze them alive. Whilst that might seem like a good way to euthanise, it's actually agonisingly painful and slow. Co2 chambers is what people who breed mice for the purpose use, since that just quietly makes them lose consciousness

I haven't completely decided what exactly to do with the mice should they become food. I honestly know absolutely nothing about the subject I was sort of considering giving them to whoever alive, and let them deal with how they chose to feed it to the snake, as I'm not completely sure I can bring myself to actually kill them. Hand them over as food, sure. Killing them, not so much

Yeahh, that's an idea, though far too many people feed live to their animals, since constriction = an even more painful death -_-;;

But yeah, best just hand them over in that case ^^;

Agreed. People shouldn't feed their snakes live mice, as not only is it a painful death for the mice but the snake could be bitten, scratched, or otherwise harmed.

I'll put mine in a spoiler, too.
Spoiler:
CO2 chambers are a good way to euthanize grown mice. But keep in mind that pinkies' lungs aren't fully developed, which actually makes being euthanized in this way slow and painful. If you're going to euthanize your pinkies, I'd do some research on humane methods for their age first.

But handing them over to whomever alive might be a good option, too. That way you don't have to do it yourself.

Congrats on the babies!

Oh god more pictures

I HELD ONE TODAY. I was nervous about it, even though every place I see says I can by today. But still, I'll hold the rest tomorrow. But this little guy, although he scooted back at first onto the tips of my fingers, held on so tight, as tight as he could to my hand. It honestly amazes me how strong these tiny, little things are.

I actually took a picture of every one, but they all kind of look the same so I won't bother you guys with that. You can see them on my facebook though if you want. Here's another

The problem is though that mice are VERY social critters, and boy mice need to be kept alone unless someone actually neuters them. I've been able to take good care of mine because I get him out every day and he has a chance to see the other mice without hurting them or impregnating all of them. (well, except this one, but that's a long story!) Not everyone has that kind of time though, hell, I really don't have that time I just do it anyway. So I guess what I should say, is not everyone has that kind of dedication

If I could have it any way I could, I'd keep them all. If not and I couldn't find an awesome home for them, I'd release the little boys to the wild. No honestly, that's a stupid, stupid idea.

Anyway, here's day six babies! You can't see very well in the picture, but they're starting to grow a little bit of fur! Mostly peach fuzz right now, but they're getting there. So perhaps in a few days, they won't be little pinkies anymore. But they are SO much bigger from yesterday!!

I dare you.

Oh my gosh. The cuteness! They are so fuzzy, they get cute so fast I think if I ever had any I could deal with the less cute pinkie stages for this. Squee!

New picturesss =3 I wonder when my continuous posting will be considered spam.

This little guy ran right off my hand, he is faster than his mom and dad! Actually, he's not He's just not used to domestication, so he's really fast, just like his brothers and sisters. If they were wild mice, this would be an AWESOME trait.

And gosh don't worry, I had him about three inches above soft bedding and ground, just as I always have for the past few days. I seriously don't know how the mom keeps these guys upstairs and out of trouble, when I put them back in the nest they immediately started roaming around. In their awkward, not really able to walk sort of way, but still. I'll post a video of them later

And yes, I double checked the genders. Unless I'm wrong, which I might be, it's still iffy to tell at this age, I do in fact have three boys and three girls.

Take me seriously.
I dare you.
