Kitten sucking on lips - August 24th 2011, 02:46 AM

^ Yes you read the title right. My 9 1/2 week old kitten just developed a strange behavior. He jumps on me and my sister's chests and puts his paws on our face and sucks our lips. I've taken him off but he comes right back and does it again. I'm not sure what that means... Any advice/similar situations?

Was he taken away from his mother too quickly? Our cat was (we didn't know until the vet told us she was 2 weeks younger than what we thought!) because she kept trying to get milk from me. It sounds like he's trying to do that to your sister.

Try giving him kitten milk but NOT when he's ontop of your sister as he will do that to expect milk, put him down and wait 10 mins. Don't give him ordinary milk because it's too strong for their stomachs and gives them diarrohea. You can get Kitten Milk in your pet store and supermarket, it's basically goats milk! xx

I'm not sure. He was given to us when he was 8 weeks old. The lady who gave him to us told us that was a normal age to seperate them?

They can be taken away at 6 weeks and i got my wee cat at 8 weeks but when we took her to be registered with the vet he told he she is just now 6 weeks. Best way to find out is have a wee chat with your vet as he can check how old your cat is!

Oh no. I hope he isn't younger. I'm going to get him some milk tomorrow and ask my vet. Thanks for your help!

No problem, it's alright if he's younger you just need to kind of act more motherly to him or your sister if it's her he's suckling on!

Hope i helped and sorry if i'm 100% wrong and the vet tells you something different but it sounded so similar as my cat tried to suckle on my chest!

I googled your problem and found a similar problem on Yahoo Questions and a person posted a really long but helpful answer. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...3083455AA7IUH1

Most baby mammals (humans included) get comfort from suckling.

Perhaps try giving the kitten milk to him in a small baby bottle, so that he has something to suckle on other than your lips?

By the way, even if he wasn't separated too early, it's normal for some kittens to want to be mothered. For example, my kitten used to lie in bed up against my chest, like she would have done with her mother.

So he just wants to be mothered. I figured that. Because he does snuggle up against my chest and just sleeps.
Thanks for your suggestions.
