Reasons to Stop Self Harming - July 19th 2012, 01:27 PM

I figured we had a reasons to recover from an ED thread, and a reasons to live thread, so I thought I'd make a list of reasons why we should stop harming ourselves

1) Because you don't deserve to hurt.

2) Beating an addiction is tough, and will make you a stronger person.

3) You'll no longer have to keep secrets from everyone and feel bad for being dishonest.

4) Your scars will fade, and as they do your confidence will grow.

5) You'll be able wear short sleeved t- shirts and shorts again.

6) You don't need to worry about being judged by others.

7) So you can say "I survived" and be proud of yourself.

8) Because you can.

9) So you can be a role model to others and encourage them to stop SH.

10) Because you're hurting enough, why hurt yourself more?

11) There are better coping methods out there.

12) It's dangerous.

13) Because I care about you and don't want you to hurt.

14) You don't have to worry about being found out constantly.]

15) Because it gets better.

16) The urges will fade over time.

17) You won't need to constantly make excuses.

18) You don't need to worry about your tools being found.

19) No bandages, no hospital trips, no explanations.

20) You don't need to worry about sleeves slipping.

21) To get your life back.

22) So you don't have to worry about infection.

23) So you don't have to spend money on what can be an expensive habit.

24) So you can feel in control again.

25) So you can be truly happy.

26) Because your loved ones wouldn't want you to hurt.

27) You'll feel better.

28) It doesn't help anything.

29) Because it gets worse over time if you don't stop it.

30) For your own safety.

31) So you and the people around you can feel proud.

32) So you don't have to feel guilty or ashamed.

33) To prove you can.

34) So that beautiful smile can become real. <3

35) So you can use the "Self harm free!" thread and know that people are fighting with you.

36) So you can learn to deal with negative emotions in a more positive way.

37) Because trust me, it'll be worth it.

38) Because you are a hell of a lot stronger than any urges, kid.

39) You're worth better than hurting yourself.

40) So you can be free.

41) Learn to love yourself, not hate yourself.

42) So you don't have to worry about future partners reactions.

43) Because you are strong & brave, and don't need to lean on an addiction to get you through tough times.

44) So you can feel good about yourself.

45) Because you wouldn't hurt a friend, so why hurt yourself? Be a friend to yourself.

46) It IS possible.

47) When people ask if you're okay, you can be honest with them.

48) You won't shy away from physical contact.

49) Because you are needed and loved.

50) Because life is worth it and so much better when every day isn't full of pain. <3

So what are YOUR reasons for giving up self harm?

Take as long as you need.

This is a great idea! This will help me.
Here's a couple:
51: So you can wear a bathing suit and go swimming without worrying
52: You can look back and see how brave and amazing you beat SH
53: You won't have to hide everything

From day one I talked about getting out
But not forgetting about
How all my worst fears are letting out
He said, "Why put a new address on the same old loneliness?"
When breathing just passes the time
Until we all just get old and die

I'd add:
To prevent disappointment and worry from family or loved ones. Because self-harm hurts not only you but others around you.

Love this thread; it's definitely all great reasons.

Stay strong. x

I agree with Britt up there, and thanks Laura <3.
My SH and ED disappoint my parents/family so much...it kills me to see that look in their face.
Erghh.
Thanks!

My reasons:

Because it hurts, and I don't deserve to be hurt.

So that I can wear short sleeves and swimming costumes and shorts.

So that people don't give me weird looks.

So I don't have to lie when my mum asks me if I've cut again.

So that my penknife can be an innocent camping tool again.

So that I don't blood stain my clothes.

So that I can inspire others to recover.

Here's one: because feeling emotion rather than numbing it with pain can be a good thing
