Not good enough - September 2nd 2012, 09:24 PM

For about a year now i've been feeling like i'm just not good enough. For the last 3 months i've got so fed up and ended up locked in my bathroom with one of those disposable shaver things ready to cut myself. But then i freak out and get really scared so don't do it. This makes me feel even worse because i'm not even good enough to do something that people consider bad. I want to cut because then i'll be proving to myself that i'm good for something. But i don't because, quite frankly, i've got no idea how and i'm scared. Any advice at all?

Hey Beth. Welcome to TeenHelp! I'm really sorry you've been going through such a hard time. As someone who's dealt with self injury on and off for like 8 years, trust me it's not something you want to be "good" at. I know it's really hard to see it that way, but you just have to try to tell yourself over and over. You're so strong for resisting and so smart for coming on here and reaching out. Self injury can be very addicting and it's just so awful to deal with. Stay strong. It's good that you're scared. It's scary. Do you have anyone you can talk to about how you've been feeling? A friend, parent, or school counselor? This is a lot to deal with on your own.
When you're really feeling down and like you want to cut, make sure you check out the alternatives thread here. There are a lot of different methods there so if one doesn't work out for you, don't get too discouraged just try another.
As far as not feeling good for anything I think you just have to do a little soul searching and find something you're really passionate about and you won't be bad at it. Maybe volunteer for something or take a class. You'll get there.

As Hannah says, don't get into a habit if cutting yourself.
And welcome to TH.

I think it really helps to be positive - you are good enough.
And to prove it, I think that listing all the good things about yourself can help. Just think about it, and you'll surprise yourself at how many things there are.
