Is this normal? - September 23rd 2012, 05:10 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of self harm, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

So the other day I SHed, and as I was doing so, although I didn't get far enough to feel any pain I felt very excited before, during and after. Is that normal? When I did it that time I was kind of distressed, and if I remember correctly, I felt a little happier afterwards...
It's not so much the pain I like, just the rush. I know a lot of SHers do it for the pain, so I was wondering if this was an abnormal mindset when it comes to self harm?

Technically, when you get hurt your body releases endorphines to counteract the pain. That's what the "rush" is. It's adrenaline and pain reducing endorphines. Just one of your body's natural ways of protecting itself. Lots of people who self-harm do so for this effect and get addicted to that feeling, so you're not alone.

Take care of yourself,

I get excited about SHing too.. Whenever I make a deeper cut, when I find somewhere that bleeds more or find a new tool to use, I get excited and want to tell someone, but there's nobody to tell..

Hey mate,

I used to Self Harm, would still if there was enough matches. But, I enjoyed it for the pain and the rush. I felt like I deserved the pain but the thrill made me feel betten and than just after I'd be like 'I need to burn, burn, burn, now' so I'd have this sort of hunger for it, for that feeling again.

Jay.

I got addicted to the rush I got from cutting. I did it a little deeper every time, always getting closer to the main veins in my wrist. But one day, I cut too deep. I passed out in the shower from blood loss. So I do understand the rush, but..be careful. Please.
