Is this bad - October 4th 2012, 01:27 PM

Hey again I am kinda new to this website and the whole SH so I guess I am trying to just get my thoughts straight. I started digging my nails into my skin about 3 weeks ago. I guess i did it bcuz the stress of school and life just got to me. I dont know if digging my nails into my skin is super wrong or even SH. I told my mom last night and she said we need to find another way for u to deal with the stress. I really want to do tht but i guess i like the feeling of the pain... I dont think I will take if further but You never know... Any advice on this would be helpful.

I honestly believe everybody's a masochist at heart. Self harm, and harm in general, releases endorphin which help stimuli the happiness emotion.

Even though I neither supportive nor against self-harm in general, your mother is correct. You should, if you can, find another way of dealing with stress. Go into sports, compete, possibly even exercise daily.

And just for your information, stress isn't a bad thing. Learn to use stress to benefit you.

A few things you must know about me.

1. Social interactions are confusing. I may offend you. Don't take it the wrong way.

2. If you need help, regardless of what it is, you can always pm me.

3. I'm brutally honest. Sugar coating is more brutal.

4. You, yes the person reading this, is a spectacular lovely person. Don't let anybody tell you different.

Hey there, I started out the same time, scratching, digging my nails into my hands and arms, then biting. And it progressed from there. Self Harm is extremely addictive and is a battle to overcome when it goes too far. So, you know its bad and you're in the beginning stages find something to keep your hands busy if you get the temptation.

Hope this helps,
Jay.

Although I can't say that the actions your taking are the worst in the world, they can progress quickly into something else.

I agree with your mom, and I think its best for you to try and find another way to deal with stress. SH is extremely addictive and has the ability to get out of hand fast, so try your best to avoid it.

Pain becomes a bad thing when you are using it to deal with problems, issues, stress and other emotions. The pain becomes nice because it's associated with the release of stress and takes the focus away from it. So yes, I would say that is not a wise behavior to continue. There are other ways to cope with stress. Associating pain with it is not a good thing, and after a while it's something people unconsciously sacrifice control over. I recommend talking to a counselor and look for other ways to cope with stress.

As much as it pains me to say a mother is right, yours is.
Try using the butterfly project or maybe working out.
Anything to keep your mind off the stress.
It's what I do!
