Doctors? - June 30th 2013, 01:28 AM

Now that I'm 18, does my doctor have to tell my parents if she sees scars? I have an appointment next week to fill out a physical, and I'm scared that she'll say something to my parents, even though legally I'm an adult now. It's been a long time since I've cut, but my parents never found out and I kind of want to keep it that way. So yeah, I guess the question is should I be worried about my doctor telling my parents?

Definitely not.. You're 18, there's no legal obligation for them to tell anyone.. Especially considering they're scars, and not fresh cuts. That doesn't mean that your doctor won't ask you about them, but she shouldn't tell your parents.

Your doctor should have no reason to tell your parents. That is a HIPPA violation. She may ask you some questions and it is your choice whether you answer them but your parents should not be told anything. If so then she is not a good doctor for you. You should be the top priority to her.

She will not have to tell your parents. She may ask you if you still harm from time to time or if it is something from your past however, this information will be kept between the both of you.

You're a legal adult now so I don't see why she would have to tell your parents. You're not a minor anymore and now have more choice as to what will be kept confidential.

If your doctor suspects anything she will more than likely ask, but it will be kept confidential.

Like the others have said, your doctor is not obliged to tell your parents, as you're not a minor anymore. The only case in which your parents would be informed would be if you, yourself, wanted them to know. I think the doctor would be breaching a confidentiality agreement if they were to tell, as it's meant to be between you and them.

Thank you guys! I knew that in the back of my mind, but this will be the first time anyone else will actually see them and I'm kind of freaking out, and also not thinking totally straight lol. Thanks again for your help!

Darlin, you'll be okay~
