urges - December 5th 2013, 05:29 PM

I've been having urges to cut again. I know that i shouldn't because it doesn't solve anything. It only makes things worse. Yesterday the urges were getting stronger and stronger than they went away then they came back. I started shuffling cards to try to cope with it but the urges are beating me up. I really want to but at the same time i don't. I don't know what else to do. Help

Hey there,

Do you know what it is that is causing you to have these urges again? If you're not sure, try and think back to what was happening when you started having these urges and see if there is anything there that could be a trigger. Or, keep a journal, and in it, write down the date and time, where you were, what happened, and how you felt. Then you can look through and notice patterns or events that may have caused it.

It's also awesome that you are trying to use alternatives like shuffling cards in order to cope with what you are going through. This is a list of alternatives to self harm, so maybe you can find other things there that can help. Maybe you can use self expression or exercise, or go hang out with a friend or family member since it is harder to self harm around others.

I think it may also help you to talk to someone about this, whether it is a friend or family member, religious leader, coach or club adviser, teacher, guidance counselor, school nurse, doctor, or other professional. They can help work you through some of the tougher urges.

Remind yourself of the reasons why you don't want to self harm if you can think of any others. Also write down encouraging quotes or print out encouraging pictures to serve as a reminder that you can do this!

I bet you can beat these urges.
