Question Should I get rid of it? - December 28th 2013, 12:41 AM

So, I have this diary/thing I kept back when I was really struggling. It was the one place I wrote exactly how I felt, no sugar coating. My parents found it accidentally and read part of it a few months ago and found out that I used to self-harm. They told me to get rid of it, but I haven't since I want to be able to remember that year since it's kind of erased from my memory.
However, I reread it last night. Stupid move. I'd forgotten a lot of the things I had done and how I'd felt. Needless to say, I started bawling and couldn't sleep. I couldn't go to my parents though, so I just kind of stayed quiet and tried not to remember all of the stuff I'd just remembered. I've been fighting the urge to return to my old habits for a few months and the recent stress has not helped. I 'm not sure if I should get rid of the diary though. There are some good things in there, but honestly, I don't remember the year, so I feel like I need it to remind me why I am mad, etc.
Your thoughts? Should I keep it? Lock it away? Trash it?
Help is appreciated!

Hi,

I think that if anything, maybe you should put it somewhere you can access it on days when you think you can handle reading it without losing all of the information, but somewhere you won't see it often enough to get tempted, if that makes sense? Journals and diaries are great places to vent and sometimes it's nice to look back, but maybe put it somewhere locked away where you won't stumble across it when you maybe shouldn't read it.

I hope that made sense.

Keep it, but lock it away. Take it out when you need to remember what has made you made, and how you have moved on since then. Think of how you've changed and forgotten all of that. I wish you luck, pm me anytime

Hi,

I agree with Dez. I wouldn't throw it away, because it essentially sounds to me like you'll forget that year of your life entirely and end up regretting the decision to toss it later. Hold onto it, but keep it somewhere out of sight out of mind most days so you don't get those urges to read it or get triggered.
If I were you, I'd hang on to the diary so I could go back and see what I've overcome, you know? One day, you'll be glad you journaled and held onto it, because it is proof that you overcame difficult times. I'd keep it.

Good luck!

I love you to the moon and back.
