Maybe opening up to someone... - January 20th 2015, 09:45 PM

Ok, so i am beyond absolutely terrified at the moment. I have been dealing with this secret for years, I cant handle it anymore. At the moment, I kind of feel like I need as much support as I can, and if that's selfish.. Then I guess I'm selfish.
I know that my mum has to find out somehow, I'm kind of coming to terms with that. Even though I though that she'll probably be ashamed of me, I'm such a disappointment as it is without adding self harm in. I think that I want to tell a teacher at school, maybe talk to a friend first and have her come with me? And then if my teacher could give me advice on how to tell my mum, or the school could help me tell her I guess that would be ideal...
I really really am scared. Does anyone have any experiences with telling their parents or a teacher or anyone? Or just any general advice would be appreciated so much.

Thanks so much for reading x

I think it's great that you want to tell someone about your self-harm! Wanting support for what you're going through is not selfish at all. You can't fight through this alone and you deserve any support that you can get right now.

I don't think your mom will feel that way towards you. Mental health awareness is something that's a little bit newer, and most parents are from different generations and lack the understanding. We can help educate them, though! Consider showing some of these articles to your mom so she can learn a little bit about self-harm. She might need some extra time to think things though, as well. It doesn't necessarily mean she's mad at you. This often comes as a shock to parents and they usually get upset with the situation that you're in, but not at you.

Bringing a friend with you for some extra support is a good idea. When I've told people in the past, I've found writing things down whether in a note or in an email to be helpful. That can give you a chance to gather all of your thoughts together so you can figure out what you want to tell people. You can also set things up. For example, you might talk to your friend and ask her if the two of you can chat about something at lunch. She'll remember this and once it's set up, it's hard to avoid. It also helps to tell whoever you're telling what you need from them; how they can help you with this.

You can always send me a PM if you want to talk about anything! Feel free to let us know how everything goes.

Thanks so much for replying

I think that's a good idea about setting it up, that way I wont really be able to back out as easily. Hopefully I'm telling someone today, I'll maybe let you know how it goes x
