gaping wound - July 19th 2015, 01:09 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of self harm, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

Put this as self harm even though it is specifically skin picking. I'm still free from cutting (7 weeks and tonight will be day 3) but skin picking is still a struggle, as you probably notice because I've made dozens of posts about it already

Well mosquito bite season is especially difficult. Not to mention we don't have a window screen in this new apartment so I now have a total of 30 mosquito bites. By the end of the summer I might have around 60.

Sadly, in the back of my head I'm excited because 60 wounds to pick at is "so much fun" (I know, gross)
I scan my body for every imperfection and pick st it.

Anyway, this morning the first thing I did when I woke up, before I even opened my eyes, I scanned my legs for that one mosquito bite wound that was gaping yesterday and is the biggest wound of all of them. I thought I can peel the scab off. Well there was no scab!
There's still blood if I put a tissue over it. It is gaping and I see white flesh inside the wound. There's nothing to pick at. Yesterday I looked all over Google to find out what the white fleshy stuff meant and couldn't find a clear straight answer. I thought by today the wound would close up but still hasn't closed. I wore shorts to sleep and didn't bandaid any of my wounds so the wound was exposed to air the whole time. I wore shorts outside in the burning hot sun yesterday and it was gaping that time too (no wonder people were staring in a grossed out way) but i expected that because i picked st it at any attempt to start healing i just pulled the scab so it had no chance to formthat sticky thing, which st first I was peeling off as well and it would make me bleed a lot.

Guess my question is, what are the chances it is infected? How do I tell? What should I do to keep it clean and safe from now on? I can't promise I'll keep it safe and clean because I'm clearly addicted to this skin picking business. My dad knows a lot about medical care for wounds but refuses to help because he knows it is self inflicted and finds what I do offensive.

Thank you in advance

Edit: I wanted to add that I did take a look at the first aid but I'm having trouble applying it to my situation. Also I lack medical insurance to even stopping by a primary care physical/GP isn't possible. But I don't think it is serious enough to go to the hospital for it. So I'm basically stuck between not knowing and not wanting to exaggerate. Maybe I'll just put a bandaid and leave it at that.

As far as I know the skin has multiple layers and below those are flesh and fat tissue.
The fat tissue looks white (and a bit as if it has bubbles?) so I guess you might have come across that.
If you did, the wound is pretty deep and will need a long time to heal.
In my experience fat tissue heals slower than flesh and skin and the healing may take a month or two. But that's just my experience and I guess greatly depends on the body and how big the wound is.

If it doesn't smell weird, has no puss in it, is not red and you don't have a fever I guess it's safe to say, that you don't have an infection, though you might want to let a doctor have a look at it anyway.
As for care. Well, it's good that you let it breath at night, though it would be better to bandage it up if you go outside, because direct sunlight (in summer) isn't to good for the wound also you won't get any dirt in it that way.
Keep it clean (but don't scrub it) and maybe you can apply some ointment twice a day.
Also sometimes people scratch themselfs in their sleep, so you might keep an eye on that. You might have to bandage it at night as well if you do that.

If it keeps bleeding though you should definitely go see a doctor! Not only because there might be something wrong, but if you loose to much blood you might faint and get hurt even more!
Also if in two or three days it still doesn't look like it's starting to heal you should also go see a doctor. Even if it's not an infection there still might be something wrong.

Take care of yourself!

Hai Susan!

I kinda had something like this go on. I continued scratching and picking at a pimple/mosquito bite and it ended up going bad. Definitely try to keep it clean, and basically everything
Etari said Don't be afraid to go to a doctor if in doubt, as if it does get infected or if the risk of an infection is pretty high, it could result in something much worse If you go outside, definitely put a bandage on it to stop dirt, unknown stuff, and even more bugs from getting in. Be safe Susan

Thank you both for the responses. My dad had a look at it and he thinks it is definitely infected. We put an ointment yesterday and he said we should wait 2 days to see if it helps.

It seemed like it was helping but then I picked at it this morning (well i tried to but there was nothing to pick at as it is still gaping with pus). I feel guilty but I can't stop.

Hey there,

If there was pus then it is probably infected. That's usually a rule of thumb I go by. I never really had pus so I was usually good to go. I'd suggest that you try looking at the alternatives to distract yourself from picking because if you continue to pick it then it will get worse and you will, probably, have to seek out medical attention and that can get expensive if you don't have medical insurance.

You're right, and I know I should stop. I just wish I wasn't glued to it as in extremely addicted like every second of the day type of thing but I've managed to do it less the past few days, just have to try and stop for good
