Yay relapsing -_- - July 24th 2015, 09:04 AM

Well, I am coming up on a month and today I came pretty cocking close to relapsing... I started rubbing but never got through skin or anything so not sure if that counts or not, but fuck... I thought I was not only well enough to never self harm again, but I thought I was well enough to basically be back to normal and deal with all of my triggers... Feels pretty shitty to feel like shit, at least at had the 3 good weeks and I hope I get more good weeks in the future. Despite having a rough day I still feel like I'm making tremendous progress going from severe self harm and 0 happy days for months to 3 weeks of relative peace. Does anyone know of a way to stop myself from SH when I'm away from home but in a stressful environment where I have to be subtle? This instance was at work.

Hey,

First of all, I want to say that being free for as long as you have is amazing. Just remember that every second counts. Relapses are expected; you can't always go from using something frequently to cope to not using it at all. So, relapse is part of recovery. Even when you're recovered, self-harm is something that will still be in the back of your mind because it's something you've struggled a lot with. You'll just continue to learn how to cope. I see that you're pointing out some positive things in yourself, and I'm proud of you for that! Keep doing that.

Does anything in particular at work trigger you? Maybe you can bring a bag of distractions, or you can bring a few objects to keep at work. Perhaps you can bring some putty or a stress ball for your hands. You could use something small, like a piece of gum or a mint, for example, and try to really focus on the taste or smell of that. If you're open with your boss, maybe you can talk to them about it and see if they have any advice?
