Minimizing itchiness during the healing process - April 30th 2019, 02:24 AM

Hi all.

I've struggled with self-harm for a long time. Most of the time I have engaged in SH my wounds have been cuts, often deep cuts, sometimes stitched/stapled, sometimes not. Itching, unfortunately, is always a part of the healing process, and always a frustrating one. With cuts I'm generally able to either do my best to ignore it or, if I absolutely cannot, carefully itch the skin around it. That seems to help it for at least a little while.

However, recently I gave myself a bad burn and had to have a surgical debridement with a subsequent skin graft. Everything went smoothly and the graft looks good. However, it's been a couple of weeks and the nerves are starting to grow back and they ITCH LIKE CRAZY. The thing is, they are IN the graft and I absolutely cannot itch them because I will mess up the healing tissue, which is going to take a very, very long time to fully heal.

Is there anyway I can minimize itching? I'm not even going to risk itching around the graft (especially considering I absolutely cannot touch the area for a couple of weeks except to change the dressing, until I can go to the followup surgical clinic). I can't put anything on it, like a cream of something, either. I'm at a loss. Help!

I was going to suggest putting lotion or cream on, but I can understand that might be a bad idea. Could you do some tension relieving exercises, such as stretching? That will move focus of your nerves regenerating to another location. Another thing would be to walk, that will move the sensory awareness to other areas of your body, such as your feet, your arms, as well as being mindful of what you're doing as opposed to the itching.

Maybe someone will come along with a better idea.

Call your doctor, and I mean call your doctor before you do this. Is it possiblt to dab some bag balm on the area with a cotton ball? I once had a really bad burn and while it healed my doctor suggestes bag balm, otherwise known as udder cream. It sounds really really weird but it worked.

Hey,
So I get a lot of bug bites or my body just itches and I believe the it chin is do to anxiety. What really helps me is benadryl tabs...I would suggest trying that. If that doesn't work or you cannot do that I would call the doctor and ask them.
