Heya Dani

Biting is a form or self harm and is just a serious as cutting. Doing anything to harm your body intentially is self harm and is serious.
I personally don't bite, but I know one or two people who have done so.
If you are breaking the skin, then yes it could leave a scar. When you break the skin, no matter how you do it, it takes the same amount of time to heal and has the same chances of scarring.
My adivice to you would be to try some of the altervative in the 'Self Harm' forum. There are some really handy ones there and they helped me alot.
One for example is the 'Ice method' this is used if you are looking for the feeling of pain, without actually leaving a mark on yourself or damaging your body. You hold an ice cube untill it melts or untill the pain becomes to much.

I hope this helped, Dani

Hi there,

Is there anything specific that you feel leads you to this behavior? If so, we're here to listen. [:

We actually have a great sticky at the top of the forum titled "Is this self harm?" - you should check it out if you get the chance. It can be found here. To quote:

Things considered self harm:
-Branding (Taking hot objects and putting them on your skin)
-Picking at your skin
-Taking off scabs/Picking at old wounds
-Pulling out hair
-Bone breaking
-Multiple piercings/tattoos (Can be self harm if done for the pain)
-Drinking harmful chemicals (Just to harm body)
-Smoking/drugs (Just to harm body)
Basically, self harm is what it sounds like - anything you're doing to inflict pain upon yourself. So, yes, I would definitely consider biting a form of self harm, and I have seen threads here of those who also bite as a form of self harm.

As far as advice, I would really recommend you to check out our alternatives thread, which can be found here. This is basically a huge list of things you can do instead of self harm, such as throwing ice at a tree, or writing in a journal, or just whatever. It's arranged according to how you may be feeling, so I think it's good to check out.

Anddddd, yes. Biting could probably leave a scar, depending on how intensely you do it. You need to make sure you are always taking care of yourself [first aid wise]. Though this thread will be no substitute for the opinion of a medical professional, you can find first aid information here.

Best of luck with everything. I hope things shape up.

Whether or not something is self harm depends upon why you are doing it. If you are deliberately hurting yourself to relieve tension or distress, to punish yourself, or generally to cope with how you are feeling then it is self harm.

The most important thing to remember is that self harm is a coping mechanism and often a symptom of other underlying problems. So if you want to stop hurting yourself, it's crucial that you find healthier ways of coping and address any issues that are causing or contributing to the self harm.

Have you checked out our alternatives thread at the top of this forum? If not, you might want to check it out when you have the chance. The thread is divided into categories according to how you're feeling. So lets say one day you feel upset, there's some alternatives listed that you might want to use, that hope to lift your mood. Not all alternatives will work for you, but there will be ones that do work for you. It's pretty much a trial and error method, but believe me it's worth it, because it's great when you know you have something healthy to turn to instead of self harm.

I hope things look up for you. If you need anything, please feel free to PM me.

Take care.
