Ive burned myself for the 1st time - September 1st 2009, 05:19 PM

Ok so after 13 days of being SH free I give in and for the first time ever I burned myself.

I dont really know why I did it
All I know is it really hurts and that I hate myslef for giving in

Im so upset and depressed at the moment and today that seems to of hit me hard

I just want to curl up into a ball and hide from the world.

Hi there!
First of all 13 days are a great start of being SH free! Proving to yourself that you can go 13 days without SH is a great step, that proves that you'll be able to go further and further without giving in. Try talking to someone close to you (a friend or family member, perhaps) about how you feel and what makes you do it. Sometimes that can help.

And as I said, 13 days is a great start!

Take Care

Hey Elizabeth,

13 days without self harm is really good That is nearly two weeks and is a long time to go without self harm when it is so addictive. You shouldn't hate yourself for giving in because slip ups are part of recovery. Many people have slip ups when trying to give up self harming. But it is how you move on from these slip ups that matters. You can either beat yourself up about it or realise it was only a slip up and you can't change that now so you have to focus toward the future and be proud of yourself for going aslong as you did.

Every amount of time you go without self harm is one step closer to stopping. You can stop but you might have a number of slip ups before you stop properly but you shouldn't let these set you back. Be proud of yourself for going 13 days. That is definitely a step in the right direction.

Do you have any idea what could have triggered you? It does help to identify the triggers so then you can see what you could do different next time. You will learn from your slip ups and will only make you stronger.

If you ever need anything then you are always welcome to PM me. Stay strong

Hi there Elizabeth,

Spending thirteen days without self harm must have been difficult, but you did very well by keeping them self harm free and for that, you should be very proud of yourself.

It's okay not to know why you self harmed after this time, Elizabeth, sometimes we just can't identify a reason. However, writing in a journal or trying to identify and triggers in the future may be a good idea. It's okay though, because you know now that you didn't truly want to slip up and perhaps that self harming was not worth it. Perhaps writing down how you are feeling right now would be a good idea alongside a list of alternatives (there is a good list [here] that you could print-out or write down) that you could use in the future, then you would be able to reflect and see that there are other options other than hurting yourself.

Try not worry about having this slip up, we all give into temptation sometime, it's okay. The main thing is that you are looking at changing things and that you are passionate about stopping your self harm and that is truly fantastic.

Keep strong, you can get through this.
