Wink Triggering movies - September 25th 2009, 02:06 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

I love movies with suicide, depression, self harm alot of the time I can relate to em.. just a question do I really have to stop watching them, theyre my fave ones... I know I deleted them off my zune for awhile but I have an issue its part of the brain degeneration where I smile all the time without wanting too... wouldnt this help calm it a little? Haha what about if I agree to an antidepressant?

I understand you being able to relate to them. My question is, how triggering do you personally find them? Do you find watching someone cut or attempt suicide triggering to how you're feeling? If so then I wouldn't watch them, on antidepressants or not. If not, then by all means, go ahead.
It just depends how well you can control yourself.

It triggers me back to depression and self harm, but I can control it most the time... It does help connect to how i really feel alot of the time and makes me want to go back but its all mostly stuff I already deal with

I know most people would think it's a bad idea, but you won't be able to control what you hear and see about SH and depression forever, so maybe you can try watching one every once in a while and seeing how well you can handle it. If you feel confident about it, do as you wish. =] If not, then I wouldn't watch them.

Wow, that's not something I hear often. =P
But yeah, that's just what seemed reasonable to me. =]

Hey Jacey,
My advice would be to watch them only every once in a while. As long as they don't cause you to SH or have suicidal thoughts it is alrite. Try not to watch them all the time though because you don't want to feel triggered all the time. Hope this helps!

Whatever it is, chances are I've been there.
If I can make it out, you can too.

Re: Triggering movies - September 26th 2009, 04:57 PM

Hey there Jacey,

I can empathise with you here, I also find that my favourite films can be ones that trigger me most, probably because I am able to relate to them, like you relate to the movies that you enjoy.
I do not think that you necessarily have to stop watching these films completely if you enjoy them, but you should be very careful when you view them so that you don't run the risk of completely triggering yourself and gaining [what feels like] uncontrollable thoughts. For example, if you're already feeling a little down or upset then I'd suggest that you watch something to try and cheer you up, something that is not triggering. If you are feeling stable and happy then you could try and watch one of those movies, though you have to be careful that they don't make you unhappy, which is always going to be the risk here. There is always the option of turning the film off if you do find it overwhelming.

Take care.
