Unhappy I got really triggered today! - October 8th 2009, 11:11 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of self harm, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

Okay, so every Thursday in Social Studies we read the news papers by ourselves, then discuss what we read. Well, in the section written by kids in our area, and the front page of that section was on cutting... and that's my friend's favorite section, so she told me to go to it and read it. As soon as I did I just assumed that she knew. So I was like, "Why?" She's like, "I thought you might like it!"...and to me it feels like she was hinting that she knew... anyway the background like had like red lines that were going in all directions to reperesent cuts, and then there was like all sorts of blades surrounding the page. And the description that the kid who was intervied had was REALLY triggering. And it just made me want to do it so bad! Then my teacher was like "I don't understand why people do that stuff, like I have no idea, but for some reason they do..." after this one girl was like, "It helps us realize it's more then a joke, that actual people do it." And what my teacher said made me feel like crap...and I was really triggered. UGH

I'm sorry you got caught in that situation and that had to happen to you. People in today's society can be very cruel and sometimes, you'll honestly just have to try to let it roll off of you and move on. You should know that you're NOT crap. Period.

I hope the rest of the week goes better for you!

I really hate it how people are so unsensitive. But don't take anything they say personally because they probably just don't understand anything about self harm. There is just so much stigma related to self harm and people are so judgemental. Don't let other people make you feel like crap because of their ignorance. I know this is so easy for me to say but try not to let it get to you. But honestly these people just don't have a clue.

Hey there,

You know, sometimes things will trigger us but beating the urge is more important. I know how hard it is to be triggered randomly but the longer you fight the urges (if that is what you want to do) the easier it will get to fight the urges. Right now the triggers are probably everywhere and really strong but with time you will start to notice the triggers lessening.

On a side note, you are going to run into people who are not very understanding of cutting but this does not mean that you will not run into to people who are understanding. I know meeting head on with people who do not understand can be rough but when you meet someone who is understanding it will make things a little better.

Try your hardest to ignore the people who are not sensitive to things like this and keep on fighting the urges you get because you can and will beat this cutting.

Best of luck,

Jenna
