Exclamation i give up - February 16th 2010, 06:28 AM

on thursday i started seeing a counselor about my cutting, and since haven't done one thing she told me to do. i cut on thursday night, i almost on friday night but didn't instead i contemplated suicide after someone insulted me on facebook, then i cut again on valentines day, and then most recently i cut tonight as well as earlier in the afternoon. i can't handle this anymore. i hate my life and i'm thinking of suicide even more. i meet with my counselor again tomorrow and i don't want to tell her i cut like 4 times, and was thinking of suicide. i just love it when that blade runs across my skin, cutting deeper with every pass. i love to cut, but i want to stop. help me please.

What she has to say is important. I know it's hard to think so, but it's true.
Throw away your tools IMIDIATELY. Like now. Get off the chair, and get them to a garbage, and take out that trash.
Scissors? Out of your room. Safety pins? Nope. OUT.
Anything pointy is a trigger for me, so I'm assuming it would be for you too.

Hey Alex,

I am sorry that you are going through all of this at the moment. You shouldn't feel bad for not doing the things the counsellor told you to do. Self harm is an addiction and it can be hard to change and try other things. If you want to stop then you can. You have already taken a huge step by going to see the counsellor. It might not help straight away and it might just be a gradual process but you have to stick with the counselling. Also you have to be honest with the counsellor; tell them that you have self harmed a lot then they may be able to explore it with you and help you with it. But they can only help if you tell them.

If you ever need someone to chat to then I am always here. Stay strong.

Hey Alex-

The problem we tend to come across with self harm, is that it is an enjoyable experience for many people. But it's bad because of the reasons we do it, and the after-effects. It's good you've come to a point where you realize self harm isn't entirely good for you, and have even thought about stopping enough to mention it.

With your counselor you should be as open as you can be. If you don't feel comfortable enough to be open with them, look into seeing another counselor. Sometimes it takes multiple times to find a counselor that really helps you, but there is someone out there that can help. Don't give up!
What are you worried that your counselor will say? If they're professional they'll handle it in a calm manner. Are you worried about parents? Worried about being told you should quit? Try to realize what it is you're so worried about. See if it's actually something worthy of worrying about as well. We worry about many things that are irrational, or have a small chance of happening.

Make sure if you are self harming you're being as safe as you can be. Make sure to practice proper first aid, and use clean tools as to try not to get an infection.

What can you do instead of self harm? Check out the Alternatives and Distractions thread in this self harm forum. If you can't find it let me know, and I'll directly link you. But there you can find tons of ideas of what you can do instead of self harm. When you get the urge to harm yourself, try one of the ideas. Before you allow yourself to harm, decide to try at least five of the things on the list. It's better than nothing.

Stay safe!
Maria.
