Mentally self harming myself? - February 2nd 2009, 09:12 PM

-Well with all the sh*t going on. Someone sent me a text to stop Self harming myself mentally. To stop with my 'mixed' emotions before I end up in a hospital. Is it possible to mentally self-harm? I'm starting to get tired of all these different text, IMs, and emails.

"Self-injury, self-inflicted violence, self-injurious behavior or self-mutilation is defined as a deliberate, intentional injury to one’s own body that causes tissue damage or leaves marks for more than a few minutes which is done to cope with an overwhelming or distressing situation"

That is basically the most common sort of definition out there for Self-harm.

So in my mind, self harm is purely physical. Not that you couldn't hurt yourself through your mind and so forth, just that I personally would not consider it self-harm.

You also have to realize, mixed-emotions are usually not your fault. Usually emotions aren't your fault at all, they're what happen, sometimes you can control them, sometimes you can't.

i don't think its possible to mentally self harm, personally.. although no doubt it is a mental health issue, but i would class self harm as physically harming yourself.

I would class self harm as physical. But that does not mean that having bad thoughts and mentally putting yourself down is any less dangerous.

I guess it could only be physical since your emotion are mental right? But if you keep replaying bad memories over in your head, you are causing yourself more emotional pain

I've always known self-harm to be a deliberate attempt to hurt oneself, and therefore wouldn't class it as self-harm if you're not aware of it.
