Bad Habit - February 13th 2009, 07:53 PM

So... i've got a bad habit..

I used to bite my nails like all the time cause i always needed something to distract myself.. but lately i've stopped doing that.. and started picking at my lips.. like i peel the dead skin of them.. but once that's all gone i bite my lip and then pull off fresh layers of skin.. and it's gotten to a degree that my lips are all red and bloody and crack and bleed and it's not helping me but i don't wanna go back to biting my nails it's taken me 10 years to get over that.. and now that i finally have i don't wanna go back..

does anyone have anything to help me???

also idk... if this is in the right thread.. so move it if need be

Well, since you use it as a distraction, perhaps you could find something else to distract yourself with that isn't harmful? Maybe writing down how you feel, listening to loud music (but not too loud, or you'll damage your hearing), hitting a punching bag or pillow, taking a walk, calling a friend to talk to. Anything like that, or anything in one of the distractions threads at the top of this forum.

Good luck!

Try carrying something else to pick at around in your pocket, like a piece of foam or whatever. Hope it works!

Talia's idea was good. a piece of foam, or a bit of ribbon that you can unravel? and for you lips, you get lip balm stuff that tastes all nasty but is still good for cracked lips, that will stop you from biting your lip...

I used to do this too! just think how nice it will be to have healthy lips!

maybe work out something with a friend, tell them that if they see you damaging your lips, get them to stop you.

good luck!

Isn't every girl's dream the same?
My head is in the clouds...
To have a boy who calls at
My heart is in the sky...
three in the morning, pours his heart out
My mind is in a dreamboat...
to you without a single hesitation
And you're the reason why
or second thought
.
Because sometimes you have to step
outside the person you've been and

remember the person you were meant to be.

The person you wanted to be.

another thing to carry is a kneaded eraser. they're really cool. you can get them at art supply stores for about $1.50. i pick at mine all the time... it helps relieve stress because it's like silly putty (but less sticky) and you can always put it back together and it doesn't make a mess.

I do that to and what I find helps is to have something else like the the foam they mentioned, or I put a peppermint or root beer barrel in my mouth and that distracts me. It also makes teachers think I have gum though.

lol. I always chew gum during school. I don't give a care... but I'm also good at hiding that I'm chewing it... so I never get caught anyways. but mints help, too, because I bite then and stuff instead of just sucking on them.

They are so great that in 4th grade a jar of them was stolen from my teacher. We never found out who stole them.
