Question Did your music tastes change? - September 1st 2010, 11:05 PM

I would like to know if your music tastes changed after you started harming, and if they did..why do you think that is and what did they change to?

I'm curious as to whether your music tastes changed because of some link with harming. Mine definitely did because I got into the gothic/emo genres and that was because it related to the dark place I was/am in whilst I was cutting.

I don't think so. Might have though, since I've been harming in various ways for like, a decade. But my musical tastes haven't changed as my forms of harming changed, if that makes any sense.

I think mine may have changed a bit. I don't Self Harm anymore, but I started listening to more darker music, versus the upbeat and dance kind (the popular music they play on radios quite frequently).

Mine did. But i think that was not only my self harming and that i could relate to the music, but because i was entering the teenage years and everyone was listening to that same music.

Not at first but later on mine certainly did. I used to listen to a lot of Christian music but I got so annoyed because all the Christian radio stations played the same songs over and over so I just finally had enough and now I listen to a lot more rock/alternative stuff.

I think so, but mostly because I learned how dumb most pop music is, so I decided to listen to some deeper music. Now, I listen to basically everything(some really happy, some sad, some angry, ect.)

Same here, I have liked darker music and fashion for many years. Even when I was like, 9 or so, it intrigued me. I remember my one aunt, dressed all Goth, and I thought she was so cool.

I've always liked darker music, ever since I started listening to music...that and I've been harming in one way or another for about 7-8 years...

No real change...

Yeah mine had a big change. When I was really depressed and self harming I listened Screamo and hard rock things like that. People found it really strange since I had never been intersted in that type of music before.

Now that im getting better I listen to completly different things. I like softer music like acoustic stuff. I can barely even listen to what I used to anymore. It was really annoying having to delete most of my music off my ipod lol.

I think mine did start to get darker and heavier the more depressed I got but my music taste widened a lot aswell. Even though I'm getting better my music taste seems to be remaining the same.

I think mine did. It became more darker music or songs with deep lyrics.

When I was in high school I listened to a lot of punk rock, metal, and what not

Now I listen to KPOP! What a transition right?

I think it changed because I was really into dancing hip-hop and popping and tutting. The best music for that is KPOP (or JPOP/MANPOP) - I got into learning Korean now too

Now I feel like Super Junior is my Backstreet Boys from middle school lawl

I listened to a lot more depressing music when I was depressed and self-harming, but I think that actually was just to do with my depression rather than my self harm. Now I'm feeling a lot happier, I listen to a lot more upbeat music.

Yes, my music taste did change. When I was really struggling, I got into more rock/alternative. I'd been into more pop before. Now that I'm recovering, I still listen to some rock/alternative, but I listen to more encouraging stuff.

Well, before my favourite singer was Mika, now it's Evanescence.
But hey, if you've seen Amy Lee, there is no going back.
Now I listen to a random mixture of music, depending on my mood.
Interesting question though, I've never thought of it before.

Yes, but I started listening to the exact opposite style of music. I started listening to more pop/upbeat music as all my old music started to trigger me easily (Marilyn Manson isn't exactly great to listen to when easily triggered ¬_____¬)

I actually listened to Mechanical Animals a few days ago and, wow O____O I never realised how damn depressing it really is.

Yes - I didn't listen to anywhere near as much Marilyn Manson or MSI , because their music conveys such loathing for self-injurers

AMY LEE <3

I don't really know to be honest. I've always listened to quite a wide range of music. Anyone who ever scrolls through my ipod says that! I've never really liked particularly 'dark' music though. I hate screamo. It's probably the only music that I can't actually listen to. I think when I'm down I listen to music with deeper lyrics or I foind a deeper meaning to whatever the lyrics may be. The music doesn't necessarily have to be 'depressing'.

Nope. I've always listened to the same type of music even before I started self-harming (some people may veiw it as "dark" music). The only difference was that I started listening to certain songs more often because they're the ones I've always went to for comfort. I did that before and I still go to those songs now that I'm recovering though, so yeah. My music's the same with or without sh. Certain songs just gets more frequent in hard times

My general music choices didn't change but I do find that if I'm feeling really down/triggered I will listen to the more "angry/emo" type music.
