What does 'emo' even mean? - November 5th 2010, 02:13 AM

Today when I was in homeroom, the kid who sits in front of me called a kid we go to school with emo. Without thinking about it I sorta yelled at him. One of the things I said to him was, "What does emo even mean Brandon? It's a type of music, a style of clothes, NOT a person!" He didn't answer me, but pointed to a boy named Sam. Sam is the kid who comes to school, shows scars and new cuts. He does that and enjoys being called emo. I don't do anything for him, he calls himself that. But when I hear the expression "She's acting so emo!" I yell at that person. Now kids have started to call me emo, and some kids have gone as far to say "Why don't you just go hang yourself with your suicidal friends?". I don't act like the depressed girl, and I guess half the time I'm not. Half the time I'm fighting against the(excuse my French) bitches and bastards who call people emo. No one would believe that I'd be a girl who could fall under the "emo" category(by their standards, not mine). My question is, what does emo even mean? I know that it's short for emotional, and teenagers use it as a term for someone who cuts themself, but does it really mean anything?

Pfft I'm not sure but I cut myself...
I'm not emotional but I do want to hang myself...
So I guesss you can call me emo and make jokes about cutting.
But remember this...
People cut for reasons of their own...

I draw to resist killing myself...I'm not good at it either.
Cutting myself lets me not kill myself too.
Im not good with advise but if I'm online I'll try to help you.

Well, Emo is based on Emotive Hardcore music, which is like, being in touch with your emotions more, emotionally reacting strongly.

So in context, its the kids who get "depressed" easily that are more likely to be labelled "emo".

emos just a stereotypical term, it kind of tallies with the music, though. Ive never bothered them though, they never seemed to mind the criticism people gave them. The only emo I ever met just clung to me like crazy, and I accepted him all right.

These days, it's definitely just a stereotype. Nothing really to worry about, just ignore it.

It's a stereotype, if they weren't calling you emo then they'd be calling you something. It's just one of those things you've got to live with =/

I guess it's the new "goth" I just find it kind of lame now. Back when I was 14/15 I guess I did try to be emo, I just liked the fashion and music back then. My boyfriend at the time also tried too hard to be emo. LOL I remember reading his music list on bebo and I said to him a few times "I didn't know you liked that band" and he said he didn't he just said he did to look different ¬_____¬

People who genuinely like the fashion and music don't piss me off, the people who go to far to fit into the stereotype do.

A lot of people associate emo with someone who cuts and listens to scary music and dresses dark. Like everyone else said it's a stereotype. Just ignore it. Yelling at people probably makes you feel better short term but it isn't going to help you out later. I cut myself but no one would ever guess that or call me "emo" even though if we're going on just cutting then a lot of people are. Don't worry about what other people think and remember that they don't know as much as you do or have strong feeling about it like you obviously do

emo is to do with music and wanting to look the band members, originally 'emo' had nothing to do with self harm ect, it is simply music and a fashion statement, the taboo that all emos self harm is a fake taboo, yes im emo, yet i cut, yes i have depression, yes i like to wear black clothes ect, im emo the fact that i cut has nothing to do with me cutting, i cut for reasons not because of im emo!

what emo means to me: NOTHING
It's a type of music
I think teenagers are plan stupid now a days with all there stereo types its so damn stupid. I honestly think you should just ignore them when they use it because if they get a reaction even if there not calling you "emo" they will keep doing it around you. Trust me been there.

Emo has to do with music. ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING to do with self harm. Self harm is a completely different thing. To me, when people use "emo" to describe self harm, I get completely insulted. It seems almost like a derogatory term. It makes me feel like a huge issue in my life is a joke... something to be laughed at.

"emo" used to be a term referencing to a deppression mental disorder. People kind of brought the term in to the goth music and punk music because of the black depressed look. I cut myself. I have suicidal thoughts, do I act on them no because I know thats the pussy(sorry if i offended anyone) way of letting go of the pain. You could call me emo, but I don't dress like that. I wear bright shirts and a bright tie everyday to school(dress code). I laugh the most and tell the most jokes to my friends, but every time I go on facebook it makes me want to cut myself and I cry because of what I see.
